Background
A native of Ontario, David Zimmer was born in the province's southern city of Kitchener. While associated with the Toronto law firm of Ledrew Laishley Reed, he has also served as an administrative law instructor in the Law Society's Bar Admission Course.[3] From 1982 to 1984 he was Director of the Humane Society and from 1993 to 1995 was President of the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Appointed chairman of Toronto Community Housing Corporation, he worked to bring the private company, Toronto Community Housing Corp., into the provision of social housing in Toronto. Upon the start of campaigning for elective office, he relinquished the public post of assistant deputy chairperson of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.
Politics
In what was considered by most political observers as an upset during the 2003 provincial election for the Ontario legislature, David Zimmer defeated the Progressive Conservative incumbent David Young, a moderate Tory, touted by some as a possible future leader of his party, by less than 2000 votes.[2] Serving as the parliamentary assistant to Ontario Attorney General Christopher Bentley, he is a member of the standing committee on public accounts, a co-chair of the Ontario Crime Control Commission and chair of the Ontario Liberal Party's Toronto Caucus. In 2004, his motion to create an "Elder Abuse Awareness Day" was passed with support from all parties. He also assisted former Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant with legislation to ban pit bulls in Ontario.
In 2006, he sponsored a Private Member’s Bill which will suspend the Ontario Driver’s license of anyone who is convicted of impaired boating,[4] which was passed with unanimous consent of all parties in the Ontario Legislature. He retained his seat in the Ontario general election, 2007[2]
Awards
David Zimmer was awarded the Greatest Local Hero Award by the North York Town Crier for his volunteer and community work in Willowdale and, in 2005, received a "Social Work Doctors’ Colloquium" inaugural Award of Merit for his work toward a just and caring society. He has also been cited for work on Ontario Municipal Board reform and the new City of Toronto Act, which gives Toronto greater power to manage its own affairs.
