-
The Hotel Metropol Palace is one of Belgrade's tourist symbols and architectural monuments. It opened in 1961 on Bulevar kralja Aleksandra, the longest street in the urban part of the city, designed by Serbian architect Dragiša Brašovan. The hotel is located in the center of Belgrade (neighborhood of Palilula), next to the University of Belgrade's Law School and the city park Tašmajdan, and within walking distances from governmental and public administration offices.
The hotel closed in 2007 for renovations.
The hotel has had many famous guests, such as Louis Armstrong, Kirk Douglas, Igor Stravinsky, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Jack Nicholson, Nehru, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Vittorio De Sica, Gina Lollobrigida, Tigran Petrosian, Mikhail Tal, Boris Spassky, Bobby Fischer, and others. Ipe Ivandic died in the hotel after falling from the 6th floor. It is widely speculated that it was a suicide.[citation needed]
