Syndal, Victoria

The area in the Melbourne suburbs of Mount Waverley and Glen Waverley in Victoria, Australia around the intersection of High Street Road and Blackburn Road is known as Syndal. From the intersection down to Syndal railway station on Coleman Parade, is the Syndal Shopping Centre. This strip is a highly populated commercial area encompassing a number of diverse local interest stores including several take-away food shops, a video library, a laundromat, and everything in between.

The commercial area is renowned for many long established specialist businesses. Syndal Music, a specialist musical instrument store, was established in 1980. It has operated since 1990 under the same ownership. Tanner's Swiss Patisserie has received many awards for their fine pastries and cakes, they have operated in the area since the mid 1980s. M for Hair, a popular hairdressing salon, has operated there since 1995. Several other Syndal businesses, including the post office, Aqua City Pool & Spa Center, and several more, have relocated within the strip to achieve a more desirable location as other commercial tenants come and go. The intersection used to have three service stations and two banks, but today has none of either. More recently, the area has attracted more notice from larger franchised stores, the oldest being Blockbuster Video on the corner of Blackburn Road and High Street Road, and the most recent addition being the Subway store. However, the video store has recently closed and is now vacant.

Notably, Syndal does have its own Australia Post post office, although Syndal is still part of the greater Mount Waverley and Glen Waverley suburbs, and shares the same postal code as Mount Waverley, 3149, or Glen Waverley, 3150.

Syndal was originally the name of a convert|114|acre|km2|sing=on farm owned by Sir Redmond Barry on High Street Road. The name for the locality was reclaimed in 1930 when the railway line to Glen Waverley station was opened and the name for the station at Blackburn Road and Coleman Parade had to be decided. The centre of the Syndal locality is on High Street Road, west of the Blackburn Road intersection .
