As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 40,066 people, 15,017 households, and 11,022 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 16 people per square mile (6/km²). There were 17,599 housing units at an average density of 7 per square mile (3/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 90.05% White, 0.28% Black or African American, 5.66% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 2.70% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 20.6% were of German, 18.9%United States or American, 10.0% English, 7.9% Irish and 5.0% Norwegian ancestry according to Census 2000.There were 15,017 households out of which 34.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.40% were married couples living together, 8.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.60% were non-families. 22.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the county, the population was spread out with 28.70% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 27.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 99.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $34,673, and the median income for a family was $40,250. Males had a median income of $35,256 versus $23,679 for females. The
per capita income for the county was $15,895. About 11.50% of families and 15.90% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 19.80% of those under age 18 and 11.90% of those age 65 or over.Census-recognized communities
