Albany County was organized
December 16 ,1868 from Laramie County inDakota Territory , which at the time had jurisdiction over part of modern-day Wyoming. census GR|2 of 2000, there were 32,014 people, 13,269 households, and 7,006 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 8 people per square mile (3/km²). There were 15,215 housing units at an average density of 4 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 91.32% White, 1.11% Black or African American, 0.95% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.65% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. 7.49% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 24.4% were of German, 11.1% English, 10.2% Irish and 6.1% American ancestry according toCensus 2000 .There were 13,269 households out of which 23.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 47.2% were non-families. 31.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.84.
In the county the population was spread out with 18.4% under the age of 18, 28.2% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 106.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.4 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $28,790, and the median income for a family was $44,334. Males had a median income of $31,087 versus $22,061 for females. The
per capita income for the county was $16,706. About 10.8% of families and 21.0% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 15.7% of those under the age of 18 and 8.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.Communities
