Academics

Oak Ridge offers a wide range of classes in History, English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Electives, and a large drama and art department. The school offers foreign languages such as Japanese, Italian, French, and Spanish. Oak Ridge is in the 96th percentile among Californian schools in SAT scores and has a 99.1% graduation rate as of 2008.
Oak Ridge was measured at 865 in the 2008 Academic Performance Index, compared with the California State average of 742 in 2008.[1]

Alma mater

Oak Ridge High School's Alma Mater is a modification of Fresno High School's same anthem. When sung or played, it goes to the tune of Cornell University's alma mater, "Far Above Cayuga's Waters". The song is intoned at the end of all ORHS football games, with the second verse and chorus omitted. The Oak Ridge Marching Band also sings or plays the Alma Mater following each home football game. The Marching Band plays Far Above Cayuga's Waters in the key of A-flat; this arrangement is 18 measures long.

Our strong can never be broken
Formed at Oak Ridge High.
Far surpassing wealth unspoken
Sealed by friendship's tie.

Raise the Chorus!
Speed it onward
'til the Hills reply
Hail to thee, our Alma Mater
Hail to Ridge High

When in future years we're turning
Leaves of memory
Still we'll find our hearts returning
Oak Ridge High to thee.

Raise the Chorus!
Speed it onward
'til the Hills reply
Hail to thee, our Alma Mater
Hail to Oak Ridge High!

Athletics

Trojan football has a long and storied history dating back to the late 90's. Oak Ridge Football became a powerhouse in the Sacramento area under the direction of Coach Mark Watson. After winning the Section Championship in 1998, Oak Ridge was a consistent contender for the CIF Division II Section Championship, appearing again in 2000 under coach Chris Jones, and again in 2002, 2003, and 2004. This period of time from 1998 - 2004 produced an incredible number of collegiate athletes.

Trojan Football won the D-II California State Championship in both 2003 and 2004, led by two outstanding athletes: Austin Collie and Seyi Ajirotutu. Collie currently plays and starts for the Indianapolis Colts, and Ajirotutu plays for the San Diego Chargers. After several tough seasons, the Trojans won back-to-back league championships in the Sierra Valley Conference both in 2008 and an undefeated run in 2009, led by quarterback Connor Benander.

Oak Ridge Basketball has had the most recent success as the Lady Trojans shocked the nation by running the table in 2010 with numerous upsets, until finally defeating 4-time defending CIF champion, Long Beach Poly in the D-I California State Championship, led by Stanford-bound Sara James. The boys won the D-II California State Championship in 2005 by upsetting Southern California powerhouse, Mater Dei, 60-44, led by current Orlando Magic player, Ryan Anderson.

School Life

Clubs

Oak Ridge High School offers students a wide variety of clubs including the Chess Club; Gay/Straight Alliance; Speech & Debate; Intramural Club; Spanish, French and Italian Clubs; Renaissance Club; YoungLife; the Interfaith Unity Club; and the Interact Club in place of the previous Key Club, and even an Ultimate Frisbee Club.

Youth and Government

Oak Ridge is home of the El Dorado Delegation of Youth and Government, the YMCA high school government program. The delegation has a reputation as the best in the state.[citation needed] Former lead advisor Scott Causley was given the Michael White "Spirit of Y&G" award for his outstanding work in the program. In addition, a reputation of multiple state-wide officers has been built. This includes 2010-2011 Youth Governor, 2007-2008, 2009-2010 & 2002-2003 State Chaplains, 2008-2009 Secretary of State, 2006-2007 Lt. Governor, 1990, 2002 & 2005-2008 Chief Justices, and 2002-2004 State Legislative Analyst.

The Ridge Review

The Ridge Review is a monthly school newspaper written by Oak Ridge students under the direction of Mrs. White. The monthly paper covers student life at Oak Ridge during the previous month, including sports, student/teacher interviews, and campus controversies. Recently, the newspaper has been canceled due to budget restrictions.[citation needed]

Sports

Oak Ridge is a member of the Division I Delta River League (DRL.) Previously it spent 15 years as a member of the Sierra Valley Conference of the Sac-Joaquin Section of the CIF. The school offers an extensive list of sport programs to its students, including baseball, cheerleading, cross country, football, Powderpuff football, basketball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, ski and snowboard, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball(lena), water polo, and wrestling. Several sports are available through school affiliated clubs, such as the Mother Lode Rugby Club which combines men's and women's rugby for all of El Dorado County's high school students. Oak Ridge has had many student-athlete alumni go on to compete nationally at collegiate or professional levels. All of Oak Ridge's athletes are passionately supported by the student cheering sections, Blue Crew and O-Unit.

Dances

Oak Ridge offers four cordial dances throughout its school year including Homecoming, Winterball, Sadies, and Prom. Oak Ridge students also frequently attend informal CSD sponsored dances, the place for seniors to get some from naive freshmen and where there are no limits on conduct, such as Klub Kaoss and Club nuFlw.[citation needed]

Oak Ridge Seniors participate in Senior Sunrise, Senior Panoramic picture day, Senior/Junior Prom, Senior Picnic, Senior Dinner Dance, Senior Check Out, Senior Ditch Day, Senior Breakfast, Graduation ceremony, and Grad Night at Golfland SunSplash Water Park in Roseville CA [2] . However, after a number of incidents at the 2011 grad night at Sunsplash, Oak Ridge is no longer welcome there.

Renaissance Rally

Traditionally, teachers and staff participate in a yearly rally held during second semester. This rally celebrates the academic success of students who have a GPA of 3.5 or above or students have improved their GPA by .5 or more over the previous semester. This rally is organized by the Renaissance Committee who is overseen by a faculty member.

Rivalries

Oak Ridge's chief rival is Ponderosa High School which has been strong since Oak Ridge's formation in 1980. The original 222 students of Oak Ridge, being El Dorado County residents, would have gone to Ponderosa had ORHS not been created, and as is true to this day, many middle school classes from El Dorado County are divided between Oak Ridge and Ponderosa.

Nearby Folsom High School west of Oak Ridge is also a rival, if somewhat less so. A rivalry has been rapidly forming with the newest high school in the region, Folsom's Vista Del Lago High School, as Oak Ridge's former football coach Chris Jones moved to Vista in 2007. Jesuit High School has also been developing into a major rival with Oak Ridge's move up to D1 this year. Grant, Cordova, Union Mine, and Granite Bay High Schools are not considered rivals except in a few sports.
