Ponderosa High School, founded in 1963, is a member of the El Dorado Union High School District. It is located on Ponderosa Road, Shingle Springs, California, USA, a semi-rural location. In the 2005-06 school year, there were 2,061 students enrolled. Ponderosa's mascot is the Bruin.

Academic attainments

Ponderosa High School, founded in 1963 by Jonathon Ponderosa, is a member of the El Dorado Union High School District. It is located at 3661 Ponderosa Rd. Shingle Springs, California 95682. In the 2005-06 school year, there were 2000 students enrolled. The school's daily schedule consists of a modified block schedule with three traditional days per week and two "block" days allowing for a total of seven classes. Ponderosa's mascot is the Bruin, which is a pregnant, female bear.Ponderosa High School houses the agriculture program for the district. Ponderosa is a "California Distinguished School" and has met their API consistently over the past three years. They have also held first place in the El Dorado County Academic Decathlon for the past 16 years. They were recently recognized in the top 3% of American High Schools by US News and World Report.

Sports

Ponderosa High School offers many sports programs which range from Golf, to Soccer, to Football, to Tennis.

Soccer

Greg Spangler and Don Augiar coach boy's JV and Varsity soccer teams respectively. Coach Spangler also coaches the Varsity girls team, which in the 2007-08 school year made a championship game appearance. Football

Ponderosa recently broke the losing streak to Oak Ridge in the 2007 season.

Rivalries

Ponderosa's biggest rival is nearby Oak Ridge High School. Oak Ridge had a ten year winning streak over Ponderosa in football, recently broken in the 2007 season. Folsom High School west of Oak Ridge is also a rival, if somewhat less so. Grant, Cordova High School (Rancho Cordova, California), Union Mine, Granite Bay High schools are not considered rivals, but are highly competitive nonetheless.
