Steven "Ste" Hay is a fictional character on the long-running Channel 4 British television soap opera "Hollyoaks".

He is played by actor Kieron Richardson.

Relationship with Amy Barnes

Ste's first appearance was with his best friend Wayne Tunnicliffe. Ste was introduced to his girlfriend Michaela McQueen and her friend Amy Barnes. Amy fancied Ste but didn't know how to ask him out. The two eventually started dating and Ste pressured her into sleeping with him in the back of his older brother's car in the woods. She did. After Amy refused to sleep with him again he dumped her. Wayne also dumped Michaela and she and Ste started to bully Amy.

Fight with Fletch

Amy's classmate Jamie "Fletch" Fletcher saw how upset Amy was and tried to cheer her up by insulting Ste, calling him a neanderthal, but he and Michaela were both standing behind him and Ste pushed him against a wall. Fletch's cousin and best friend Josh Ashworth - who was standing next to Fletch - tried to hold Ste off but it was Amy who managed to get Ste off Fletch by threatening to get a teacher.

Trying to get to Hannah Ashworth

Ste and Wayne then made friends with Josh and Fletch to get closer to Josh's sister Hannah. They met with the cousins in the park with their other friends and encouraged them to join them in smashing cars and causing a nuisance.

Although Josh thought Ste and Wayne were both cool, Fletch knew what they both were really like. Ste and Wayne then invited themselves over to the Ashworths' house (to see Hannah) but she wasn't there. Josh's father however, Neville, was. He asked the pair to leave but Wayne recognised Neville from working in Price Slice (with his sister) and Neville gave the two lads a lecture in how he manages the supermarket.

The pair eventually gave up on trying to meet Hannah as she was never around when they came over, as she was instead at her friends' houses.

Bullying Nicole Owen

Ste and Wayne then started to bully Nicole Owen because of her brother Sam being a rapist and burning down The Dog in the Pond pub. They terrorised her and even put a dead rat in her locker, but Ste told her that they were only messing around and asked her to meet him in the park.

He meet her along with Wayne and their other friends, and they got her drunk and made a pass at her. Nicole shouted at them to leave her alone and they left her crying on the floor. This made Nicole's mother Carrie realise that the family needed to leave the village and the Owen family (minus Russ) left Hollyoaks for good.

Joyriding

Ste then made up with Amy (who had since made up with Michaela). What Ste didn't know was that Amy was pregnant (but Ste was not the father) and looking for a distraction, so he took her joyriding with Michaela (who had started fighting Amy for Ste's attention). Amy loved the thrill of joyriding and during her new relationship with Ste he revealed his new step dad was abusing him.

A few days later, Josh tried again to be cool with Ste, so he copied an adult video for him. Ste asked if he could go to the Ashworths' house to get it, so he, Amy, Josh and Fletch went round there and Ste noticed Neville had left his car keys on show. Ste then took the boys and Amy for a joyride in Neville's car before bringing it back again.

The following day, Ste pulled up in a stolen BMW in front of Josh, Fletch, Michaela and Amy when they were walking home from school. Ste told them all to get in the car and he drove it across town. The police started chasing them but Ste lost them and told the others to get out of the car while he ditched it. Amy wanted to stay with him but the others managed to persuade her to get out.

The Crash

Meanwhile, Amy and Michaela's fight over Ste started to escalate and the two girls started to think of ways to impress the bad boy. Amy suggested they skive school to steal a car and go joyriding again. Josh and Fletch overheard Amy's suggestion and Amy wound the pair up by telling Ste that they thought he wasn't a good driver. Ste invited the cousins to come with them but they refused.

Ste and the girls stole a car and drove around for a bit before going back to school, where they saw Josh and Fletch walking home. Ste threatened them with a beating if they didn't do as he told them. Ste wanted to teach Josh and Fletch a lesson as he thought that they didn't believe he was a good driver. To make his point he was going to scare them with some cool driving moves then leave them in the countryside to walk home but he wasn't sure he would be able to do it.

Ste started speeding and swerving on the road trying to frighten the cousins but he ended up crashing the car. Although Ste, Josh, Fletch and Michaela were all right, Amy was really badly injured as she didn't have her seatbelt on. While she was unconscious Ste threatened to kill Josh, Fletch and Michaela if they grassed him to the police, and fled the scene.

Ignoring Ste's threat, Fletch was brave enough to give Ste's name to the police and the officer radioed for another officer to get Ste's address from his school. Josh and Fletch were then arrested and spent the night in a cell, while Michaela went with Amy to the hospital.

A wanted fugitive

Days after Amy (and her unborn baby) managed to pull through at the hospital and she, Michaela, Josh and Fletch were charged with joyriding and sentenced to community service.

A few days later Josh and Fletch saw Ste hiding out in the village. Fletch was extremely angry at Ste for leaving Amy, who could have died, and started attacking Ste because he was angry that he was getting away with it . Ste almost got the upper hand on Fletch but Michaela's brother John Paul saw the fight and pushed Ste off Fletch, while Josh managed to call over PC Calvin Valentine who was patrolling about the village.

John Paul gave Ste over to Calvin, and Josh and Fletch explained the situation to Calvin and Ste tried to give a false name to the officer but he radioed in to the police station and asked if there was warrant out for Ste Hay's arrest. When he was told there was a warrant for Ste's arrest he took him in for questioning.

The following day he went back to school after being released on police bail, Amy approached him and apologised for encouraging him to go faster which led to him crashing the car, but Ste told her to stay away from him for a while.

te Returns

After being away for nearly a year in a detention centre, Ste returned to the village hoping to get forgiveness off Amy for what he did. First Ste started stalking Amy and hiding in the bushes, but when Amy was home alone he made his move and confronted his shocked ex. He tried to make her see that he was a changed person but Amy was unconvinced. Amy threw a party which quickly grew out of control. Ste's former best friend Wayne who was also a guest at the party grabbed Leah, but Ste got her away before he could do her any harm and threw Wayne out of the house. Amy decided Ste deserved another chance.

When Amy's father Mike returned to town, he nearly killed Ste for what Ste had done, but Ste told him he was Leah's dad (which wasn't true), and Amy backed him up. Reluctantly, he let Ste stay in their home, but they still did not get along. Soon, Ste and Amy moved into a small place of their own. Amy was upset about their drab living conditions and lack of money, and Ste told her to grow up. She stayed in contact with her sister, Sarah, to get items from home. Unbeknownst to Amy, Mike had contacted Ste's stepfather, who heavily implied Ste was a danger to Amy and the baby. Mike pressured Sarah to tell him where Amy was. They dropped in on Amy and Ste unexpectedly, and Ste's stepfather, Terry began brutally beating him, with Amy and Sarah horrified. Mike pulled Terry off Ste and threw him out. Shocked and horrified Amy threw Sarah and Mike out. Ste told Amy it was all his fault, he'd asked for it. A furious Amy told him from now on, they would only have each other, meaning she would cut off contact with her family.

Then Ste desperate for money stole Warren's credit card and bought flat screens and other items. When Warren found out he got repo men to take the things away and mocked him for it afterwards. For revenge Ste broke into Evissa and stole money, vandalised the place and set fire to it. Louise however was in the salon and caught him so he overpowered her and caused her smack her head on the table badly. He then left her there as the fire started to spread.

Warren said when he found out whoever did it, "They are dead" but later overheard Ste admit to causing the fire so he went round Ste's house and gave him a brutal beating as a result.

Ste has recently started dealing and taking drugs in order to get money for Leah's first Christmas. He lost his job after trying to steal alcohol from the Dog. He, along with Fletch, start taking drugs whilst Amy is out and let his friend, Nige, stay over Christmas as Fletch flushed some drugs down the toilet and Ste had to repay Nige. Nige was kicked out by Amy, after breaking one of Leah's Christmas presents.

When Amy got caught with drugs, at school, he didn't seeem to care and told her she should just get a job. When she was let off he was happy and they walked into the argument between Kathy and Suzanne. Amy decided to never talk to her mum again and the next day (9/01/08) kept going on about it to Ste. He revealed it was his 18th. She told him to go and get some 'booze'. Whilst he was gone, a woman came to the door claiming to be his mum. Amy let her in and when Ste returned he was furious. He ordered his mum out but she told him she had brought his Birthday present, which was a CD. He threw her a can of beer and said I guess you want this, suggesting she is an alcoholic. Amy's mum Kathy then came to the door and Ste let her in. Amy and Kathy had an argument and Amy told Pauline, Stes mum, about what Kathy had done. Amy then threw Kathy out. Leah woke up and Amy introduced Pauline to her 'granddaughter' but refused to let her hold her. Pauline then left. Ste and Amy argued with Ste shouting in Amy and Leah's face's. Amy put Leah in her cot and asked Ste if he was ok. He slammed her against the wall and she banged her head. She retrited to her room and craddled Leah, crying. At the end of the episode it showed Ste knocking on the door. Amy then left to stay with her parents. After coming back to get her stuff Terry Hay came round and started threating Ste and then Amy. After Terry left Amy forgave Ste and said that if he did that ever again she would leave for good. Ste , Amy and Leah are now back together.

Ste showed signs of responsibility which was a shock to most, as he threw Sasha Valentine and Fletch out of the flat because they had taken Heroin, stating he could not have them in the flat because they posed a risk to baby Leah.

Mike and Zoe

Ste went back to Amy's house to collect a few things and saw Mike Barnes and Zoe getting cosy on the couch. He stood outside and filmed the two on his phone. He later revealed their affair by sending the video to Sarah and Amy while they were sitting next to Mike and Zoe.

Leah's "Leukemia"

In March 2008, Amy and Ste's financial trouble gets worse and worse, but Ste is too proud to ask for help and goes around looking for a decent job. After he fails all of the interviews over the phone, Ste gets desperate and makes an attempt to steal Carmel McQueen's handbag, but gets caught by John Paul McQueen and Kris Fisher. To stop them from calling the police, Ste accidentally lies and says that he needs the money, because Leah has Leukemia.

The following day, Kris tells Ste's lie to Frankie, and records a message about Leah on his radio show. Frankie then passes the "News" on to Nancy who tells Amy's sister, Sarah who comes to see Amy. Before, they know it, much to Amy's horror and Ste's delight, the couple begin receiving Money and Presents from Nancy and Warren Fox. Amy tries to tell her father that it was all a lie, but didn't have the heart and eventually tells Ste that she will go along with the lie and use the money they receive to buy clothes and toys for Leah.

Domestic Violence

Ste has hit girlfriend Amy several times during their stay in the flat. Once when Ste lost his temper he shoved Amy so hard that she bashed her head against the wall behind her. In late April, after Amy discovered that Ste had sold Sasha drugs and nearly killed her on an overdose, Amy lashed out and told Ste he was no different to his drunk mum Pauline and bullying father Terry. This caused Ste to again lose his temper and punch Amy in the face, giving her a black eye.

And on the 8th May 2008, shortly after Leah's Ieukemia was discovered false and Nancy confronted the messed-up teens, Amy said it was Ste's idea. When Nancy left in digsust, Ste told Amy he was angry for blaming it all on him. When he pushed Amy, for the first time she hit back and shoved Ste scrambling into the wall, barking "Don't touch me!" Ste then punched her in the stomach and told her not to look at him like she did again and stormed off.

Amy then left for her family but they wouldn't answer the door, leaving Amy sobbing on the doorstep. Several times Amy has been hit by Ste, but each time he has cried over her forgiveness, Amy forgives him and they remain a struggling couple.

On 5th June 2008 Ste once again lashed out at Amy during an argument about Josh Ashworth, this time he threw a boiling saucepan of soup at her. The soup scolded Amy giving her a serious burn for which she had to visit the hospital. Appearing distressed and crying whilst the nurse bandaged and treated the burn, she was asked what had caused this to happen to which she lied saying it was an accident on her part. On the way home Ste starts an argument blaming everything on her and manipulating her to believe it was her fault, and even gets her to apologise. Later that day Amy suggests to Ste that she get a job, leaving him angry and upset demanding her of why what he earns isn't good enough for her. Amy arrives home and Ste is already there. She is in the bathroom and Ste walks in telling her how she needs to stop trying to please her friends and says that her long hair makes her look like a child. Saying that it annoys him to no end, he takes a pair of scissors and cuts her long plait of hair off, leaving her hair length at just her shoulders.

Out of fear Amy told him to stop as she was pregnant, even though she wasn't. He stopped and the next day he showed how sorry he was and how thrilled he was that he's become a dad. However, out of guilt Amy confessed, but Ste didn't lose it as he then realized that she had said it out fear. He collapsed sobbing into Amy's arms saying how sorry he was and when she had comforted him they decided to try for a baby together.

The violence storyline is set to climax soon.

Break Up With Amy

Amy soon finds out she is pregnant and Ste is over the moon. After Justin and Ste have collected a kareoke machine from the McQueens as they are in debt, Ste steals the machine and gives it to Amy as a present. Amy takes it over to the Barnes household for an afternoon of fun. On the way she bumps into Justin and tells him about the kareoke machine Ste bought, not realising he'd stolen it from Justin. Justin then goes to have a go at Ste. When Justins gone, Ste turnes on Amy for telling him and mercilessly hits her over and over, despite the fact that she's pregnant with his child. Amy's had enough and flees the flat. Tina McQueen finds her sobbing and bruised in the street and takes her back to the McQueens home, where she stays the night. Amy confesses to Myra about the domestic abuse, and Myra encourages her to tell her dad. Amy tells her dad, and Mike goes and beats Ste up.

Attempted Suicide

After being beaten up by Mike Barnes, he gets drunk in the SU bar. Sarah finds him and yells at him. Justin, seeing him obviously dismayed and severely bruised sticks up for him and forgives him for stealing the karaoke machine. Later on, Ste climbs to the top of the scaffolding outside the SU bar. Elliot runs to the Barnes and tells Amy, who runs to below where Ste is threatening to jump. Kieron tries to climb to where Ste is, despite his fear of heights. He tries to persuade him to come down. Ste says to Amy that he loves her and Leah and that he wants to love the new baby too. Amy then says that he doesnt love them, you don't do that to people you love. Ste says if Amy doesnt get back with him, he's going to jump. Sarah then shouts that he hasn't got the guts to jump until Hannah quiets her. Amy then turns to Hannah and says that she agrees with Sarah that he won't jump. Ste then says he will jump and if Amy says she wants him to jump then he'll jump. When Amy says she doesnt care and walks away, Ste is left heartbroken. He decides to come down from the scaffolding but slips on the way down and falls off the building. Amy runs to his side. Ste later wakes up in hospital with a broken leg. Amy comes to visit him, but despite Ste's desperate pleas to get back together, Amy tells him she's had enough and leaves. After being discharged he has a heart to heart with Justin, who feels sorry for Ste. Ste clings on to Leah's teddy bear, and sobs that he is now alone again.
