Joyride (crime)

Joyride (crime)

To joyride is to drive around in a stolen car, boat, or other vehicle with no particular goal, a ride taken solely for pleasure.

In UK law [England and Wales: [http://www.opsi.gov.uk/RevisedStatutes/Acts/ukpga/1968/cukpga_19680060_en_1 Theft Act 1968 (c. 60)] , ss. 12, 12A; Scotland: "Strathern v. Seaforth", 1926 J. C. 100; [http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1988/ukpga_19880052_en_14#pt7-pb6 Road Traffic Act 1988 (c. 52)] , s. 178; Northern Ireland: [http://www.opsi.gov.uk/RevisedStatutes/Acts/apni/1969/capni_19690016_en_1 Theft Act (Northern Ireland) 1969 (Chapter 16)] , s. 12; [http://www.opsi.gov.uk/RevisedStatutes/Acts/nisi/1981/cnisi_19810154_en_13#pt11-ch3-l1g101 Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981 (No. 154 (N.I. 1))] , Art. 172] , joyriding is not considered to be theft, because the intention to "permanently deprive" the owner of the vehicle cannot be proven. Instead, a separate offence of "taking without consent", usually known by the acronym TWOC, applies to motor vehicles. Therefore "twoccing" or "twocking" is another term for joyriding.

In Wisconsin [ [http://nxt.legis.state.wi.us/NXT/gateway.dll/Statutes%20Related/Wisconsin%20Statutes/16103/16139?f=templates$fn=document-frameset.htm$q=%5Bfield%20folio-destination-name:'943.23'%5D Wis. Stat. s. 943.23] ] , joyriding is a misdemeanor that implies the car was returned undamaged within 24 hours.
