- 25th meridian west from Washington
The 25th meridian of longitude west from Washington is a line of
longitude approximately 102.05 degreeswest of thePrime Meridian of Greenwich. In the United States of America, the meridian 25 degrees west of theWashington Meridian defines the eastern boundary of the State of Colorado, the western boundary of the State of Kansas, and the western boundary of the State of Nebraska south of the41st parallel north .History
On
1861-01-29 , the Act Admitting the State of Kansas to the Union defined the western boundary of the new state as the 25th meridian of longitude west from Washington. This rendered the western portion of theTerritory of Kansas unorganized. Thirty days later on1861-02-28 , the Act Organizing theTerritory of Colorado defined the eastern boundary of the new territory as the 25th meridian of longitude west from Washington.cite web |url=http://www.colorado.gov/dpa/doit/archives/territory.pdf |title=An Act to provide a temporary Government for the Territory of Colorado |format=PDF |publisher=Thirty-sixth United States Congress |year=1861-02-28 |accessdate=2007-01-14] The creation of theColorado Territory moved the western boundary of theTerritory of Nebraska south of the41st parallel north east to this meridian. These boundaries on the 25th meridian of longitude west from Washington remained whenNebraska became a state on1867-03-01 , andColorado became a state on1876-08-01 .Longitude in the United States
Latitude andlongitude uniquely describe the location of any point on Earth. Latitude may be simply calculated from astronomical or solar observation, either at land or sea, interrupted only by cloudy skies. Longitude, on the other hand, requires both astronomical or solar observation and some form oftime reference to a longitude reference point.Thomas Harrison produced the first precisemarine chronometer in1761 .The completion of the first
North America ntelegraph line between Washington and Baltimore on1844-05-24 , introduced a technology that could transmit time signals at thespeed of light . On1850-09-28 , theUnited States adopted two primary meridians oflongitude for officially use: theGreenwich Meridian (through the old Royal Observatory atGreenwich, England ) for all nautical and international use, and theWashington Meridian (through the oldUnited States Naval Observatory inWashington, D.C. ) for more accurate astronomical and domestic use. The completion of the first telegraph line acrossNorth America on1861-10-24 , allowed time signals from the Naval Observatory in Washington to be transmitted across the continent. The United States used the
Washington Meridian as the longitude reference for most states and territories created between1861 and1868 . The completion of the first permanenttransatlantic telegraph cable on1866-07-28 , allowed the Naval Observatory at Washington to be synchronized with the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. The need for a separate national meridian for the United States gradually faded, and in1884 , U.S. PresidentChester A. Arthur called theInternational Meridian Conference in Washington which selected the meridian of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich as the internationalPrime Meridian . On1912-08-12 , theUnited States adopted thePrime Meridian of Greenwich for all uses domestic and international.References
