Indroduction

Swansea Sound is a radio station based in Swansea, Wales. It was the first Independent Local Radio station to be established in Wales and was the ninth of its kind in the whole of the United Kingdom. It is also older than both BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru.

Coverage area

The station is available on medium wave, at 1170 kHz (257 m), in the Swansea area, extending "from Tenby to Porthcawl, and beyond" according to one of their straplines,Fact|date=September 2008 and somewhat further on DAB. The reach to Tenby, however, is across the sea - the station is typically unavailable in the valley areas around Carmarthen. The station can also be heard in North Devon, across the Bristol Channel, although this is not acknowledged by the station's official coverage area.

Programming

The Programming Director is Steve BarnesFact|date=September 2008, and the station is based on Victoria Road in Kingsbridge, near Gorseinon - along with its sister station, The Wave, which plays more recent chart music, and occupies the FM channel once held by Swansea Sound before The Wave was launched in 1995.Swansea Sound is dedicated to broadcasting Welsh language programming most evenings, with hourly news updates, discussions and music - mainly through the medium of Welsh. The station also provides live commentary of all Swansea City football matches.Their only transmitter is in Winch Wen, on the side of Kilvey Hill and does not use the same mast on the top of Kilvey Hill as its sister station The Wave - Swansea.

The music Swansea Sound play is more targetted to the 35-50 age groupFact|date=September 2008. Although they play some new current songs from the chart, they mostly succeed in producing the classics and oldies for elder listenersFact|date=September 2008, as The Wave play tunes for the younger generationFact|date=September 2008. They have the same concept as their sister station, The WaveFact|date=September 2008 and is also owned by the same company. The competitions are slightly different and also the presenter shows. Swansea Sound take pride in speech and music shows every dayor|date=September 2008, but transfer broadcasting stations live from England at 10.00pmFact|date=September 2008.
