Lotion was a Manhattan quartet started in 1991 by brothers Bill and Jim Ferguson, Tony Zajkowski, and Rob Youngberg.

Career

Lotion had released only two seven-inch singles ("Head" and "Tear," both on Kokopop) before the group recorded "Full Isaac" for spinArt in 1994. The album received glowing reviews from alternative outlets in America and England, including album of the year distinction from The Village Voice. The band toured America and Europe (with Pavement, Throwing Muses and Mercury Rev), recorded a song for the Frank Sinatra tribute album "Chairman of the Board", and released the EP "Juggernaut" on Big Cat Records UK. A second EP, "The Agnew Funeral", followed in late 1995 before Lotion released "Nobody's Cool" early the following year. Novelist Thomas Pynchon wrote the liner notes for the album. "The Telephone Album" followed in 1998. The band made an appearance during an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. [http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:u09ks30ba3vg~T00]

In 2001, Lotion announced that they were officially on hiatus while they pursued their own interests. Tony Zajkowski has gone on to play bass and sing for Schizo Fun Addict and has joined with former Lotion band-mate Rob Youngberg to form Honeycomb.

Trivia

Mentally ill rock star Wesley Willis once made a song about a show Lotion played in Chicago. He recounts "the rock show was whooping it up" "the rock show was whipping a horse's ass", "the crowd roared like a lion" & more humourosly that a lot of people met the band after the show, but the lead singer "wasn't nice at all" and that "he was a stupid jerk, but otherwise, the show was terrific"The song appears on his "Greatest Hits vol2" on Alternative Tentacles Records.
