Alan S. Lowenthal (born
March 8 1941 inNew York City ) is a Democratic member of theCalifornia State Senate .Lowenthal was elected to represent the 27th District of the State Senate in November 2004. The 27th District includes the Los Angeles County communities of Avalon, Long Beach, Signal Hill, Lakewood, Cerritos, Artesia, Bellflower, Downey, South Gate, Lynwood, Paramount, Hawaiian Gardens, Florence-Graham and Willowbrook.
Lowenthal entered elected office as a council member of the Long Beach city council in 1992. In 1998 he won a seat in the
California State Assembly , where he served until 2004, at which time he successfully ran for the State Senate. Prior to entering elected office, Lowenthal was a professor ofcommunity psychology atCalifornia State University, Long Beach , where he still holds the position of professor on leave.Lowenthal's ex-wife, [http://www.longbeach.gov/district1/default.asp Bonnie Lowenthal] , and his daughter-in-law, [http://www.longbeach.gov/district2/default.asp Suja Lowenthal] , both currently serve on the Long Beach City Council.
