Biography
Mykola Plaviuk was born on June 5, 1925 in the village of Rusiv in Poland (now part of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast in independent Ukraine). During World War II, Mykola became active in the Plast scouting movement in western Ukraine, which in effect became the youth division of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists.[1][2] After the war, he fled to Germany where he received a diploma from the University of Munich in economics. He emigrated to Montréal in Canada in 1949 where he became an active member of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada.
During mid of the 1960s he was one of the organizers of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians and elected their Secretary General (1967-1969), Vice President (1973-1978) and finally President (1978-1981). He was an active member and supporter of Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR) Government-in-exile, which claimed to be a legal continuation of the authorities of the short-lived independent UPR.
After death of incumbent President Mykola Livytskyi, Plaviuk became his successor, serving from December 8, 1989 to 1992. During a ceremonious session of the Verkhovna Rada on August 22, 1992 in Kiev, Mykola Plaviuk formally ceded his authority and the activity of the UPR to the first President of independent Ukraine, Leonid Kravchuk, who was elected in 1991.[3][4] In his declaration, Plaviuk proclaimed that the current Ukrainian state is the lawful successor to the Ukrainian People's Republic and a continuation of its authority and state traditions.[3][5]
On May 18, 1993, Mykola Plaviuk was granted Ukrainian citizenship.[6] He was also conferred the state order "Order of Merit, 3rd Class" and the "Order of Kniaz Yaroslav the Wise, 2nd Class."[7] Mykola Plaviuk is the current leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (since 1981). He is married, and has two sons and two daughters.[3] Lives in both Kiev and Canada.
