Second Baptist School is a private primary and secondary school in the Memorial area of
Houston ,Texas ,United States .SBS serves approximately 1,000 students from PK – 12. As a self-supporting agency of the Second Baptist Church of Houston, the school has access to nearly convert|1000000|sqft|m2|-5 of educational and recreational facilities on a 42 acre, Memorial area campus.
The School Mascot is the flying Eagle.
History and Founding
In 1946-47, a group of Houstonians established an elementary school. On February 3, 1947, Second Baptist School opened its doors to 14 kindergarten students.
In 1974, the Middle School began with 6th grade and each year another grade was added to complete the middle school level. In 1979, the Upper School began with the 10th grade and by 1982, the school provided an instructional curriculum of grades pre-kindergarten through twelve.
Retired lawyer John Tyler was among the school's most notable educators by students, and faculty, throughout campus.
J. Brett Jacobson, the school's headmaster, is seen as the figurehead in both academic and extracurricular affairs, given his intellectual persona and distinguished presence on the grounds.
Within the past three years, speakers such as Michael Reagan, Oliver North, and Mary-Lou Retton have given distinguished addresses for fundraisers for the school.
