Memorial, Houston, Texas

The Memorial area of Houston, Texas is a wealthy district west of the Downtown Houston and northwest of Uptown Houston. It is bounded on the south by Buffalo Bayou, on the east by the 610 Loop, on the west by Beltway 8, and extends just north of the Katy Freeway (Interstate 10). Within its boundaries is the area called “The Villages,” which includes the cities of Bunker Hill Village, Hedwig Village, Spring Valley Village, Hilshire Village, Piney Point Village, and Hunters Creek Village. These independent cities operate autonomously of Houston and have joint fire and police coverage. The northeast area near I-10 and Beltway 8 of Memorial City is home to Memorial City Mall and the newer, more upscale Town & Country Village lifestyle center, plus the emerging edge city around them.

The surrounding parts of Houston in Memorial are called the “Near Villages”.

Notable residents

Notable residents that live within the Memorial area include Astros Lance Berkman, Roger Clemens and Jeff Bagwell, Texans player Mario Williams, Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander, Basketball star Steve Francis,oil magnate Wes Davis Halliburton, Continental Airlines CEO Larry Kellner, and statesman James Baker. Hilary Duff also grew up in Memorial before relocating to California. Michael Dell, founder of Dell, was born and raised in the Memorial area. Dr. Mohammad Athari, M.D. also lives in the Memorial Area. As does founder of Sab-Co oil Ali Saberioon.

Education

Pupils in the Memorial area attend schools in the Spring Branch Independent School District. Despite being partially located in Houston, it is "not" served by the Houston Independent School District. Memorial High School in Hedwig Village serves the eastern portion of the Memorial area, while Stratford High School serves the western portion of the Memorial area. Westchester Academy for International Studies is another Memorial area high school run by the Spring Branch Independent School District, but although being located between Stratford High School and Memorial High School, it is a charter school catering to students throughout Spring Branch and not Memorial-specific.

Memorial is served by the Spring Branch Memorial Branch of Harris County Public Library (the Spring Branch Memorial Branch is in Hedwig Village).

State

Shopping

The upscale and revived Memorial City Mall is located in the area. The area is also served by the Town and Country Village and adjacent CityCentre lifestyle center that are sought to replace the now defunct Town %26 Country Mall.
