East Cobb

East Cobb

East Cobb refers to the section of Cobb County, Georgia that is roughly bounded by Cherokee County to the north, Fulton County at Willeo Creek and the Chattahoochee River to the northeast and southeast, Bell's Ferry Road, I-575, and the Marietta city limits to the west, and Interstate 285 and the Cumberland/Galleria edge city at the southern tip. The area is known for its large upscale houses and wealthy residents, who are sometimes cynically referred to as "East Cobb snobs" [ [http://atlanta.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/the_atlanta_translator_dictionary/Content?oid=286440 Creative Loafing Atlanta | Arts | The Atlanta translator dictionary ] ] .

East Cobb consists primarily of unincorporated Marietta, but a significant chunk of unincorporated Roswell also falls within its bounds, as defined by USPS ZIP codes (though Roswell itself was in Cobb until 1932). A small sliver of unincorporated Atlanta is in the extreme southern tip near Vinings, and a portion of the northwest is in unincorporated Kennesaw (30144), with a few homes near the county line in the north-northwest being Woodstock (30188). No part of East Cobb technically falls within incorporated city limits. The main ZIP codes are 30062, 30066, 30067, 30068, and 30075, though all of these zip codes extend outside East Cobb.

Small communities, many established early in the area's post-Cherokee history, include Mount Bethel, Shallowford Falls, Sandy Plains, Noonday, Blackwells, and Westoak. The "city" of Chattahoochee Plantation, which never had a city government, was established along the river by the Georgia General Assembly entirely to prevent majority-black Atlanta from annexation in 1961, and was officially abolished in 1995 along with dozens of other Georgia towns with defunct governments.

Johnson Ferry Road is a major arterial road between East Cobb and Sandy Springs. Its intersection with Roswell Road (Georgia 120) is one of the busiest and most accident-prone in the county. This area is called Merchants Walk after its first shopping center, and is now a major retail district, likely the largest in the county after the two major shopping mall areas. It was first developed in the 1970s, in the years following the land development of Indian Hills, the first major housing development in Cobb. The Cobb County Public Library System also maintains a library branch of the same name next to the original shopping center.

East Cobb contains two mountains: Sweat Mountain and Blackjack Mountain.

Education

Several high school attendance districts comprise the area known as East Cobb: Sprayberry, Wheeler, Kell, Walton, Pope, and Lassiter. The extreme western portion of the Sprayberry zone lies outside of East Cobb (the Town Center at Cobb mall area). The western half of the Kell district also lies outside of East Cobb. The extreme southwestern part of the Wheeler district lies on the west side of Interstate 75, thus excluding the area from officially being a part of East Cobb.

The middle school districts that comprise the area known as East Cobb are: Daniell, McCleskey, Simpson, Hightower Trail, Mabry, East Cobb, Dodgen, and Dickerson (small portions of the Daniell and East Cobb Middle School districts lie outside of East Cobb; a sliver of the eastern portion of the Palmer Middle School district can be considered a part of East Cobb).
