It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the North Karelia region. The town has a population of 8,503 (31 January 2011)[2] and covers an area of 1,854.79 square kilometres (716.14 sq mi) of which 253.7 km2 (98.0 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 5.31 inhabitants per square kilometre (13.8 /sq mi). Nurmes railway station is now the northern terminus of a twice-daily VR passenger train service from Joensuu. The railway north of Nurmes is open for freight only.
Hotel club Bomba is situated in Nurmes.
Nurmes is also the official Christmas Carol City of Europe.
Karelian nest
The municipality is officially unilingually Finnish, but in 2009, Finland’s first Karelian language "nest" (pre-school immersion group) was established in Nurmes.[6]
