The Town of Port Hedland is a Local Government Area in the Pilbara region of Western Australia for the twin towns of Port Hedland and South Hedland. It has a population of 11,959 (ABS 2006), [Census 2006 AUS|id=LGA57280|name=Port Hedland (T) (Local Government Area)|accessdate=2008-01-01|quick=on] of which only a few hundred live outside the settlement boundaries. History

In 1894, Pilbara Road Board (renamed Port Hedland Road Board in 1904) was gazetted. On 1 July 1961, it became a Shire Council following changes to the Local Government Act, and became a Town on 18 March 1989.
