Pilbara region ofWestern Australia , and with an area close to convert|380000|km2|sqmi|-3, is claimed to be the largest of its kind in the world (until January 2009, when two new municipalities in Greenland will be larger (Qaasuitsup andSermersooq , each around 650,000 km2 [http://www.kanukoka.gl/12630] ). The Shire's seat of government, and home to slightly over half the Shire's population, is the town of Newman in the shire's south-west.History
In 1896, Bamboo Road Board (renamed Marble Bar Road Board in 1904) was gazetted, and in 1898 Nullagine Road Board followed. On 1 July 1961, both became Shire Councils following changes to the Local Government Act.
On 27 May 1972 the two merged to form East Pilbara Shire.
