Danan (woreda)

Danan (Somali: Dhanan) is one of the 47 woredas in the Somali Region of Ethiopia, named after its major town, Danan. Part of the Gode Zone, Danan is bordered on the south by the Shebelle River which separates it from the Afder Zone, on the west by Gode, on the north by the Degehabur Zone, on the east by the Korahe Zone, and on the southeast by Kelafo.

Demographics

Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 43,845, of whom 18,654 were males and 25,191 were females; 10,494 or 23.93% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 25.2%. Information is not available for the area of Danan, so its density cannot be calculated.[1] This woreda is primarily inhabited by the Ogaden clan of the Somali people.[2]

The 1997 national census reported a total population for this woreda of 34,428, of whom 20,038 were males and 14,390 were females; 7,030 or 20.42% of its population were urban dwellers. The largest ethnic group reported in Werder was the Somali 34,420 (99.9%).[3]
