Midway (CTA)

Midway (CTA)

Midway is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, serving the Orange Line. It is the southwestern terminus of the Orange Line, and serves Chicago Midway International Airport in Chicago, the city's second-largest airport. Trains departing from this station go through a series of Orange Line-only stops before reaching Roosevelt, where passengers can transfer to the Red and Green Lines. The stop immediately following Roosevelt, Library-State/Van Buren, is the first stop in the Chicago Loop, and also offers transfer opportunities. Most of this station's passengers are travelers, either to or from Chicago, and the turnstiles at the station's entrance are somewhat wider than most to accommodate for luggage. The station, along with the rest of the Orange Line, opened on October 31, 1993, after a long wait by Chicago's southwest side for 'L' access.

Paint scheme

Midway was one of the few stations to not have a drastic color scheme when the Orange Line opened. The station's only color came from the roof trusses that were painted green. Over the years the stations along the line were all repainted white (except for Roosevelt which is painted green). In 2005 the CTA changed their color to gray with the bottom accented in orange.

Interesting Facts

* Midway is one of the few stations on the CTA to feature two vendor stores.
* Midway was constructed below grade in anticipation of a future extension to Ford City Mall that would utilize a subway under 59th.
