McKinnon is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of McKinnon on the Frankston railway line. McKinnon station is unmanned and is in Metcard Zones 1+2 overlap.

Facilities

The station is located on the northern side of the McKinnon Road level crossing, which provides station access.

The station consists of three platforms, two in an island format. The island platform (platform 1 & 2, Flinders Street & Frankston bound) has a semi-large brick building, while platform 3 (Frankston bound) has a smaller brick building. A large Metcard machine is located at the entrance to platforms 1 & 2, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A small coin-only Metcard machine is located at the entrance to platform 3. Trains from the city often run express through McKinnon on weekday afternoons.

Steam trains stop at McKinnon station and run through to Mordialloc station during the annual McKinnon Road fair, which is held on November 12.

History

McKinnon station opened on September 1 1884 as "McKinnon Road", renamed to it's current name "McKinnon" in 1885. [ [http://www.vicsig.net/index.php?page=infrastructure&name=McKinnon VICSIG Infrastructure - McKinnon] ]

The McKinnon Road level crossing was fitted with an unusual set of interlocking boom gates operated by a wheel in the signal box like the more usual interlocking swing gates. These were removed when a 3rd track was added in 1987. [ [http://www.signspotters.hobbiesplus.com.au/railway_crossings_4.htm SignSpotters] ]
