Facilities

McKinnon is located on the northern side of the McKinnon Road level crossing, which provides station access.

The station consists of an island layout and side platform; Platforms 1 & 2 (island platform) consists of a semi-large brick building, while platform 3 consists of a smaller brick building. A large Metcard ticket vending machine is located at the entrance to platforms 1 & 2, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. Additional coin-only Metcard and myki ticket vending machines are located at the entrance to the island platform, and at the entrance to platform 3. Trains from the city often run express through McKinnon on weekday afternoons.

Steam trains stop at McKinnon station and run through to Mordialloc station during the annual McKinnon Fair, which is held in November.

History

McKinnon station opened on 1 September 1884 as McKinnon Road, and was renamed McKinnon in 1885.[1]

The McKinnon Road level crossing was fitted with an unusual set of interlocking boom gates operated by a wheel in the signal box, unlike the more usual interlocking swing gates. These were removed when a 3rd track was added in 1987.[2]
