The station is located at the eastern end of the Burnley Street road overpass and next to Madden Grove, with station access from Madden Grove and Swan Street via the station's
underpass .The station consists of four platforms, all four in an island format. Platforms 1 & 2 has a large brick building, and serves passengers travelling towards the city, while platforms 3 & 4 has a small weatherboard building and serves the lines heading out towards Alamein, Glen Waverley, Belgrave and Lilydale. Burnley is the junction for the Glen Waverley line.

Metcard machines are located at the entrances to platforms 1 & 2 and platforms 3 & 4, which are able to dispense most ticketing options available, and accept notes, coins and electronic swipe card payment from a savings or cheque account. In addition, an office between platforms 1 and 2 is manned on weekday mornings.Stabling facilities are located at the down end of the station, adjacent to the Glen Waverley line, while an additional little used siding is located at the city end. A
signal box is also at the city end.A second subway is located beneath the tracks at the east end of the platforms, which level's with Stawell Street. This subway merely offers a thoroughfare beneath the tracks and does not actually connect to the station.

History
Burnley station opened on
May 1 1880 as "Burnley Street". It was later renamed to "Burnley" in1882 .The flyover at the down end was completed in August

1966 the signal box was rebuilt, the Burnley Street level crossing was grade separated, and the line towards Richmond upgraded to four tracks. The third line to Hawthorn was commissioned in1972 . [cite web
