East Richmond is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Lilydale, Belgrave, Glen Waverley, and Alamein lines, on Church Street in the suburb of Cremorne. It is 4.3 km from Flinders Street Station, the center of the city's suburban railway network, and in Metcard ticketing Zone 1.

Facilities

East Richmond station has two platforms, although four tracks run through it. Platform 1, for city bound services has a 1960s station building. Platform 2, for outbound services, has a Victorian era building stripped of most of its decoration. The station is not staffed and the ticket office and other facilities are locked.

Due to its location at the city end of Melbourne's busiest group of railway lines a large number of services pass through East Richmond although only a limited number stop, largely because of its proximity to Richmond station, a few hundred metres down Swan Street. Services to and from Belgrave and Lilydale do not stop at East Richmond. Glen Waverley trains stop there in off-peak, but trains to and from Glen Waverley in peak hours do not stop there. Most services to and from Alamein, Blackburn and Ringwood stop at the station.

On weekends, the Glen Waverley services are the only trains to stop there, necessitating a change at Burnley for those wishing to use the Belgrave and Lilydale lines and an additional change at Camberwell for Alamein line passengers.

History

The line though East Richmond station was opened by the Melbourne and Suburban Railway Company to Hawthorn on September 24, 1860.cite book

The first extra track was commissioned on August 1 1966, and the second one on January 9 1967, along with the new platform.
