"Rare Birds" is a 2001 Canadian comedy/drama film. It was directed by Sturla Gunnarsson and written by Edward Riche based on his novel.

Plot

Dave (Hurt) has had some bad luck recently. His wife lives in Washington, DC, his restaurant is not doing good business. Phonse (Jones) helps Dave by making up a story about a rare bird sighting which begins to help Dave's business. Phonse also finds ten kilos of cocaine and tries to get rid of it with the help of Dave.

Trivia

* Filmed in 30 days in Newfoundland except for the final scene which had to be delayed seven months due to inclement weather.
* Due to the limited budget, the crew from "The Shipping News" loaned film crew and film equipment to complete the film.
* Many of the bit parts had been cast by the director who found interesting locals for the roles. The film's grip was used as a hostage and a phone caller.
