The route serves to connect the rural communities of Cruso, Woodrow, and Bethel with the town of Canton.
The route runs from the intersection of U.S. Route 276 with North Carolina Highway 215 and ends at U.S. Routes 19 and 23. The route also provides convenient access to Interstate 40.
