Camden family

Eric and Annie Camden and their seven children: Matt, Mary, Lucy, Simon, Ruthie, Sam and David.

Eric Camden

Reverend Eric Camden (played by Stephen Collins) was raised in New York City by his parents, Colonel John Camden and Ruth Lynch. Based on the episode "Halloween" (season one, episode six), it appears that Eric was born in 1954 (which would make him 42 years old at the time). According to the episode "One Hundred" (season 5, episode 12), his birthday is in January. Eric attended college for five years and graduated from Kolbel Seminary. Shortly thereafter he married and began a family with Annie. He also has one sister, Julie Camden-Hastings, who ended up marrying the doctor that delivered Eric and Annie's oldest (Matt) and youngest (Sam and David) children.

Annie Camden

Annie Camden (played by Catherine Hicks) is the daughter of Charles and Jenny Jackson. She has one half-sister named Lily. Annie met Eric and married straight out of college. During her college education, Annie studied everything from art to business and economics, and in later seasons returned to school to earn her Masters. Her mother, Jenny, died early in season one from cancer. Annie was hit hard by her death and then by her father's bounce into a relationship with a woman named Ginger. Eventually, Annie accepted Ginger and accepted their marriage. Charles later suffered from Alzheimer's and eventually died of natural causes.

Matt Camden

Dr. Matthew "Matt" Camden (played by Barry Watson) is the eldest child of the Camden family. When the show was introduced, Matt was the oldest of five and a junior in high school, but later became the eldest of seven when Sam and David were born. Matt would sacrifice his school time to help others who were in more need of help and if they wished to remain anonymous, he would respect their wishes and not even tell his father. He bounced from job to job, including being a delivery man for the Dairy Shack, and a tutor. Originally having bad grades, he was able to pull his grades up. He graduated at the top of his class, and was accepted for a White House internship in Washington, D.C., with First Lady Hillary Clinton. He went to college in town and, for a while, roomed with friend John Hamilton, a son of a minister. The Hamiltons are long time friends of the Camden family. Matt's uncle, Hank Hastings, helped get him a job in the cafeteria at the hospital and, during his work there, Matt decided to become a doctor. He later ended up working at a woman's clinic where he—after helping save the life of a woman with an ectopic pregnancy—began working with Hank.

He met Sarah Glass, a fellow medical student. They went out and married on their first date. Ruthie found out when she called them at their honeymoon suite and kept this secret for many episodes. Because Sarah was Jewish, and the daughter of a rabbi (played by comedian Richard Lewis), who wanted his daughter to marry a Jewish man, they kept their marriage secret. They eventually had a large family wedding presided over jointly by Matt's father, the minister, and Sarah's father, the rabbi. The wedding almost did not take place as their fathers feuded over Matt—who was planning on converting to Judaism. The couple moved to New York to attend med school and, while there have been problems, they have remained happy and together. At the end of Season ten they graduated from medical school, and it was announced that Sarah was pregnant with twin boys. Sarah later gave birth to the twin boys the following summer.

Mary Camden

Mary Camden-Rivera (played by Jessica Biel) is the eldest daughter of Eric and Annie (Note that Jessica Biel is actually a year younger than Beverley Mitchell who plays younger sister Lucy). By the time she was 14, Mary was an aspiring athlete with an immense love for basketball. As the months progressed, she seemed to rise in both ability and confidence (so much so that she wanted to play in the WNBA someday) until an accident that took place before the end of her freshman year in which she was hit by a car, critically injuring her knee. She spent months of recuperation afterwards, and seemed to be on the right track for the most part. She had a series of different boyfriends. She began dating Wilson West, a man with a child from a previous relationship, who would become a more serious person in her life. Wilson had sex with a sixteen year old girl, who had a car, he explained to Rev. Camden, and got her pregnant. The girl died in childbirth, leaving Wilson with a son, Billy (actually named Wilson Jr.). By her senior year, she (along with other members of the basketball team) allowed her grades to slip, which caused her basketball coach to impose a lockout on her and her teammates. After a secret meeting, the team decided to enact their frustrations by vandalizing the school gym. They were caught at the scene of the crime and arrested—including Mary. Through a special program for first offenders, Mary was able to evade serious punishment by doing community service, which was where she met Robbie Palmer, the second serious boyfriend she would have after breaking up with Wilson two years earlier. When she got her driver's license, she couldn't parallel park but on Lucy's advice cried about it and the driving instructor compassionately awarded her the license. Mary missed Robbie while away from him as he took her to a motel, and she punched him. During this time she has a dream of playing pro for the Lakers and thinks that when her coach rings her up that this is the dream coming true but it's actually training disabled people for the Special Olympics.

Mary decided not to go to college but work instead. She could not hold down a job, being fired everywhere, from The Pool Hall to Pete’s Pizza. While working at Pete’s, she met Frankie and Johnny, a pot smoking, alcoholic couple—the same age as Mary—who were married and had a baby girl, Mercy. Eric and Annie learned that Mary had been caught drinking while babysitting her cousin, Erica, been pulled over by a cop and given a warning, and that she had numerous debts to credit card companies, insurance companies, and to her family. Not wanting Mary to hit rock bottom, Eric and Annie decided it was best she go to New York because they couldn't give her the attention she needed. She lived with her grandparents, the Colonel and Ruth, and worked at a homeless shelter in the fall, and started college in the winter. She left home angry at her entire family, whom she saw as betraying her, and refused to speak to her father. In time, she calmed down and planned to return home for the summer, as she and Robbie started dating again.

While in New York, she discovered that Wilson was also living in New York. Instead of staying in Glen Oak for the summer like she originally planned, she broke up with Robbie and moved back to New York and started dating Wilson. After getting advice from the Colonel, she decided to get a job in public service. When she couldn’t become a police officer because she was not old enough, she applied for a position as a firefighter, and, after the Colonel pulled some strings, she got into the firefighter program. When she started training as a firefighter, she met Ben Kinkirk, who was also training to be a firefighter. He came over to her place and the two kissed, which Wilson walked in on. The two broke up and she returned home to California for a time, but on a trip to New York with Lucy, she revealed she was moving back to New York to train to be a flight attendant. She began dating a pilot, Jack, who was the same age as her father, though this did not last. She moved to Florida for a time to get away from her family. While in Florida, Mary ran into Carlos Rivera, a man she had met while volunteering at a homeless shelter years earlier, and who the Camdens took in during the holiday season. Carlos and Mary were married shortly after Lucy wed, and Mary revealed her pregnancy and the marriage to her family at the that time. Her parents visited at the birth of her son, Charles Miguel "Charlie", named in honor of her and Carlos' late grandfathers. They eventually divorced and Carlos took Charlie back to Puerto Rico when Mary gave her parental rights up. It was announced by Carlos when he attended Simon's wedding that the two were back together and that Mary was expecting twin girls. Though Mary was not at Simon's wedding she was able to still see her family the next day as she finally graduated from college the same day as Matt and Sarah. During the following summer, Mary gave birth to twin daughters.

Lucy Camden

Rev. Lucy Camden-Kinkirk (played by Beverley Mitchell) is the third Camden child, second daughter. Lucy is known in the earlier seasons for the many boyfriends she had, as well as being overly dramatic and selfish and spoiled; by the time she reached her junior year in high school, however, Lucy became much more settled. Her first boyfriend was Jimmy Moon. She had one "normal" relationship with him but they broke up. At one point she gets arrested for being in the area where Jimmy was dealing drugs. Later Jimmy was shown when he had some problems with drugs, and the last time Jimmy was shown was when Lucy had a case as juror in the season seven (though nobody told her what it was about). In school, she had lots of friends and was popular—including being nominated for homecoming queen in her senior year. She once was engaged to her high school sweetheart, Jeremy, but they eventually broke it off. She had a very good relationship with her friend Mike, who was placed in a mental hospital and was otherwise ostracized. Although Mike liked Lucy, it never quite worked out.

At the end of the series, Lucy followed in her father's footsteps and became a minister because of her strong religious devotion. She eventually married Kevin Kinkirk and had a daughter named Savannah. They stayed in the apartment above the garage at the Camdens' house up until Savannah was a few months old. She also became pregnant with twin boys at one point, which she lost in a miscarriage that deeply upset her emotional state—though she eventually recovered. At the end of the summer, after she miscarried, she told Kevin she didn't want to have any more children. She was a working mother (working as an associate pastor), while her husband Kevin was a stay-at-home dad. However, Kevin was offered a job as a police sheriff in “Crossroads.” Later on, Lucy helped a young woman named Sandy with her pregnancy, and they soon became friends. In the season 11, Lucy continued on with her life as a minister, friend, mother, and wife. She was offered another position in a different town as a minister. In the penultimate episode, she announced that she was pregnant once again.

Simon Camden

Simon Camden (played by David Gallagher) is the fourth child and second son. In the early part of the series, he was known to his siblings as "The Bank of Simon" because he always seemed to have money, and in a similar way to Alex P. Keaton (Family Ties), he loved to make money also sometimes his siblings would get him to spend his money on them. He used to also be very fascinated with The Tick. He always wanted to become a magician until he got older. He also became interested in cars, and being a mechanic.

Simon was the one who wanted to get a dog, during the pilot episode. Although his parents did not think he was mature enough for the responsibility of a dog, his mother went to the pound "just to look" and then fell in love with a dog that was imminently scheduled to be euthanized. So she ended up bringing the dog home, which was adopted by the Camdens, and named "Happy". However, later (in a two-part episode, during season two), the child of Happy's previous owners saw their dog, (then called "Whitey") on TV and wanted her back. So her father came to the Camdens threatening legal action if "Happy"/"Whitey" was not returned, which made Simon and Ruthie try to dye Happy's fur with food coloring in an attempt to make her look like a different dog. At the end of that two-part season finale, after Happy ran away from her previous owners and went back to the Camdens, her previous owners agreed to let them keep her. They realized that after living with the Camdens for two years, "Happy" considered it her home and family, that she belonged there and would be unhappy anywhere else.

It was a rough transition for the sensitive Simon into high school, though the popular, bubbly Lucy helped him meet new people. At the beginning of the summer before his senior year, Simon accidentally "killed" Paul Smith, a 13 year old kid who was on drugs and not wearing a helmet in a car accident. The death was ruled accidental and Simon was not brought up on criminal charges, but he couldn't escape the pain and blame he inflicted on himself for Paul's death. Fearing that Paul's brother would retaliate, Simon passed the "CHSPE" and left school early and started college. While in college, partly as a way to cope with his guilty feelings and low self esteem, Simon broke the family's edict of not having non-marital sex and experimented with sex. Simon had three serious girlfriends over the course of the show, Deena, Cecilia and Rose. Simon gets involved with a girl that he knew from college named Sandy who has a son named Aaron fathered by Martin Brewer. Simon provides emotional, and at one point, maybe even physical support for Sandy and her son.

After a scare involving his girlfriend Georgia being pregnant (it was later revealed that she only made the claim so Simon would stay with her), he met Rose. Rose and Simon were deeply in love, got engaged, and planned a wedding. They finally get to the wedding day but they decide to not get married because neither was ready for marriage. Rose still had feelings for an ex-boyfriend. At the end of the season 10 finale, Sandy and Aaron show up to the party after the non-wedding and Sandy says she needs to talk to him and Ruthie tells Eric that Simon has something to tell them and it's suspected that Sandy revealed to him that he is Aaron's father and he was going to tell the family.

Ruthie Camden

Ruth "Ruthie" Camden (played by Mackenzie Rosman) is the youngest daughter. She is named after her paternal grandmother.

During her youth she was portrayed as the family sneak. She was also rather precocious. Ruthie ages quickly over 7th Heaven 's run. She started pre-Kindergarten sometime in September, after all her other siblings have started school, but in season two, she’s in grade one. By the end of season 11, she is seventeen years old and managed to take enough courses to graduate a year early. She doesn't like being called Ruth, even in school insists on Ruthie. She likes to get Simon in trouble at every opportunity.

She once attended private school in season five and at the beginning of season six. However, she moved back to public school because she found out that the private school wouldn't let her friend Yasmeen transfer there.

During her freshman year of high school, she started developing feelings for the Camdens' house guest, Martin Brewer. She went so far as to tell him that she loved him, but quickly covered by saying “as a brother.”

During her sophomore year of high school, she started dating older boys, hoping that it would eventually lead her to a relationship with Martin. She also started wearing overdone makeup and became rather self-centered and superficial. She also appeared to have dropped any female friends she ever had and hung around just boys for much of her teen years.

It took her a long time to get over Martin. In "Love and Obsession" (season 10), she dreamt that Martin told her that a paternity test was done and that he was not the father of Aaron, but Simon is. She even dreams about him not having met Sandy—let alone having a baby. This is when Peter showed back up. After that, it turns out that she had moved on because Peter was her first love.

However, Martin went against his beliefs during the previous summer and slept with a girl named Sandy at Simon's college. Ruthie was crushed when she learned that Martin was expecting a child with Sandy, the girl whom he met and slept with only once. She tried to hang onto Martin with the claim of being his friend, while he was being emotionally unresponsive to the baby's mother, and was present when Aaron was born along with Martin and her immediate family.

Upon Aaron's birth, Martin left Glen Oak for college and now lives near his son. This left Ruthie heartbroken, though by the end of season eleven, Martin finally admitted to Ruthie that he loved her but at this point Ruthie was in love with T-Bone. In the final season, it was revealed that she could graduate from high school a year early to be with T-Bone. So that at the end, he ended up leaving her, and she and Martin never really got a chance.

Sam and David Camden

Samuel "Sam" and David Camden (born February 14, 1999) are fraternal twin boys and the youngest of the Camden children. They were originally played by all four Brino quadruplets, Lorenzo, Myrinda, Nikolas, and Zachary, but once the quads started aging and showing differences between them—especially since one is a girl (Myrinda)—Lorenzo and Nikolas became the official actors for Sam and David.

Sam and David were born during episode 14 of season three (“In Praise of Women”). This episode was The WB's most watched hour. They were partly named after the R&B duo Sam and Dave.

Happy

Happy the Dog debuted in the pilot episode, "Anything You Want", in which Simon begged his parents for a dog, and also prayed to God about it. One day, he was up in his attic and he heard a faint bark and looked out the window and a dog was sitting in the front yard. Happy's original owners tried to come and claim her, but after seeing how heartbroken Simon and Happy would be if they took Happy away for good, the original owners decided to let Happy stay there. Happy lives with the family for the rest of the seasons.

Extended family

Sarah Glass

Dr. Sarah Glass (portrayed by Sarah Danielle Madison) is the only child of Richard and Rosina Glass and the wife of Matt Camden, oldest son of Eric and Annie. She first appears in the Season six episode I Really Do as one of Matt's co-workers in the free women's clinic where both Matt and Hank work. In that episode Matt is determined to find the woman he's going to marry as soon as possible. He has a date with some girl he does not know, but since he is called in to go to work instead at the last minute, he ends up talking to Sarah all night. The recurring character of Doc, played by Ron Zimmerman (who wrote four Season one episodes), persuades Matt to marry Sarah instead.

Sarah asks Matt out for coffee and they grow quite close. Sarah is an only child with a Rabbi for a father - thus her Jewish faith is very important to her. Sarah reveals that she is independently wealthy, unlike Matt, along with many other "intimate" details. The next night, they go out for dinner after introducing the other to their parents. They marry that night, but when they try to tell Sarah's parents they end up only admitting they "got engaged". Ruthie is the only person to find out about the marriage (and keeps it a secret until the Season ten episode Secrets). The Camdens have dinner at the Glass house, in an attempt by Matt and Sarah to bring the families closer. After both fathers do all they can to stop it, Matt and Sarah marry for the second time.

Matt and Sarah attend medical school at Columbia University in New York City, although they return (sometimes together, sometimes separately) to Glen Oak every so often. Their marriage has some shaky patches, and Matt getting re-acquainted with his ex-girlfriend Heather does not help matters. Sarah keeps her maiden name for the hospital, and at first Matt and Sarah do not reveal to the others at the hospital that they are married. It is revealed in the season ten finale that Sarah is pregnant with twin boys. She and Matt graduate medical school during the season 10 finale and they talk about her having the twins that summer in season 11.

Rabbi Richard Glass (Richard Lewis) is Sarah's father. He did not approve of Matt at first because he was not Jewish.

Rosina Glass (Laraine Newman) is Sarah's mother. Unlike her husband Rosina liked Matt and helped Sarah plan her wedding to Matt.

The Riveras

Carlos Rivera (Carlos Ponce) becomes Mary's husband in season eight after a guest appearance five seasons earlier in the episode "Here Comes Santa Claus." While Jessica Biel was absent from the show, her character of Mary continued with the help of Carlos - Mary and Carlos even had a son, Charles Miguel "Charlie", without Mary ever appearing. Although Mary filed for divorce from Carlos and even signed away custody of her son in the two-part season nine finale, by the season ten finale they were back together and expecting twin girls and Mary was graduating college. In the beginning of season eleven, it is mentioned that Mary gave birth to her twins over the summer and was teaching at a high school and coaching a girls high school basketball team in New York, where she and Carlos live with their three children.

Charlie Miguel Rivera is Mary and Carlos's baby boy named after Carlos' & Mary's grandfathers who've both died.

The Kinkirks

Kevin Kinkirk (George Stults) was first introduced as a police officer in a New York airport, and soon revealed to be Ben's older brother. Kevin and Lucy set up a date as soon as they met, and like each other so much they decide to pursue a long distance relationship. Kevin eventually transfers to the Glen Oak police force, and moves in with the Camdens. Kevin and Lucy eventually get engaged and marry each other, living together in the apartment over the garage and then moving into the house directly behind the Camdens at the end of season nine "Kevin Loves Lucy." Kevin has a daughter with Lucy named Savannah. At the beginning of season ten, Kevin is almost shot at and decides to be a stay at home dad. He convinces Lucy to adopt a Great Dane named Sampson, but Lucy also makes the decision to adopt a tiny Yorkshire terrier named Delilah. It was revealed at the end of the season 10 that Kevin and Lucy were expecting twin boys, however Lucy had a miscarriage over the summer. In the series finale, Lucy told him that she was pregnant again.

Savannah Kinkirk (Alyssa & Hannah Yadrick) (born in season nine episode "Paper or Plastic?") is Kevin and Lucy's first child. She is named after Savannah, Georgia, where Kevin and Lucy went on their honeymoon. Savannah was born in an elevator with Matt and Kevin helping with the delivery.

Ben Kinkirk (Geoff Stults) is Kevin's younger brother. They are two years apart. He was introduced as Mary's fellow firefighter trainee in Buffalo in the season six episode "Relationships." Ben becomes interested in Mary while she is pondering Wilson's marriage proposal. Ben attends Kevin and Lucy's wedding in the episode "We Do." The last episode he appeared in was in season 11's "Pain in the Neck" where he attempts to flirt with Ms. Margo, the teacher who made a move on Eric.

Patty-Mary Kinkirk (Natalie Ramsey) is Ben and Kevin's younger sister. She first appears in season six episode 19 "Letting Go." She is introduced as a student in San Francisco.

The Jacksons

Jenny Jackson (Alice Hirson) is Annie's mother. She was introduced in the pilot episode, "Anything You Want," when she came to Glen Oak to tell Annie that she had Leukemia. In the episode, In the Blink of an Eye, after spending her final days living life to its fullest, (i.e. shopping for the family, drinking wine, flying first class, not watching her cholesterol) she dies in her sleep while staying with the Camdens. She tells Annie goodbye and disappears in her room. Her post-funeral and memorial occurred in No Funerals and a Wedding. While Annie is asleep before she gives birth to the twins, Jenny appears to her in a dream, encouraging and reassuring her this is in season three, episode 14 In Praise of Women.

Charles Jackson (Graham Jarvis) is Annie's father, who was introduced in the pilot episode, "Anything You Want." In the episode, "In the Blink of an Eye," he almost tells Simon that his moon rocks aren't real, and then receives them later and declares that he is lucky to have them. He quickly took off after Jenny's funeral, in "No Funerals and a Wedding," because he did not want to fall apart. He ended up turning back from the airport and sat at the cemetery for a few hours before finally returning to the Camdens' house to apologize to Annie. He later appeared in "Dangerous Liaisons, Part 1" where he introduced his new girlfriend, Ginger, to the Camdens. This angered Annie, but the problem was solved in "Dangerous Liaisons, Part 2." He died of Alzheimer's disease in a later season.

Ginger Jackson (Beverly Garland) is Charles Jackson's second wife, whom he met three months after Jenny's death. She first appeared in "Dangerous Liaisons, Part 1" where she was introduced to the Camden family as his girlfriend. However, Annie said she hated her. She makes peace with Annie in "Dangerous Liaisons, Part 2."

The Hastings

Julie Camden-Hastings (Deborah Raffin) is the younger sister of Eric. She flew in from New York to be with the Camdens for Thanksgiving. While she was there, she tried to hide the fact that she was an alcoholic. When Simon was playing “Batman” he took the key to the liquor cabinet, pretending it was the key to Gotham City. Julie tried to get the key back, but when he wouldn’t give it to her, she attacked him. Annie ran in and threw her out of the house. Instead of sending her to a hospital, Eric locked her in his bedroom while she started to go through detoxification. She eventually checked herself into a rehab center. After living in the center for a few months, she went back to New York to live with her parents, the Colonel and Ruth. She returned to Glen Oak two years later to get a fresh start. Back in New York, everyone knew she used to be an alcoholic and had been fired as a principal because of her drinking. While in Glen Oak, she got a job as a teacher and fell in love with Dr. Hank Hastings, the man who almost killed Matt during delivery. The two eloped in Eric’s church. Julie became pregnant and wanted to leave Hank because she felt he was cheating on her with one of his female patients, which was not true. Julie went into labor at the Camden’s house and Hank delivered the child in Eric and Annie’s bedroom. She gave birth to a girl, whom she and Hank named Erica, after Eric and Annie. When Julie and Hank needed a babysitter, they took the risk of allowing Mary, who had been quite irresponsible lately, to babysit. Later, when they couldn’t get a hold of Mary, they rushed back to their house and discovered Mary had passed out after drinking a bottle of beer and had a friend’s baby over while she was babysitting. Julie later wanted to leave Hank again when she discovered that he had left his job at the hospital to be the head of a Woman’s Clinic without discussing it with her first. Eric locked them in a room at the clinic and told them they couldn’t come out until they had worked out their problems. They reconciled and Hank learned that Julie was pregnant again. She gave birth to a baby boy. Both she and Hank attended Lucy’s wedding.

Dr. Hank Hastings (Ed Begley, Jr.) is Julie's husband. He was Annie's doctor when she was pregnant with Matt which almost ended in fatal results, but unexpectedly delivers the twins.

Erica Hastings is Julie's daughter. She was born at the Camden's home, in Eric and Annie's bed which was given to her parents because of that. Feeling that they wanted to thank Eric and Annie they named the baby after them: "Eric", after Eric and "A" after Annie, which combined to make "Erica".

The Camdens (Eric's Parents)

John "The Colonel" Camden (Peter Graves) is Eric's father, who used to be in the Marines. Whenever he visits his son's home to visit the grandchildren, he expects military discipline, order and organization, even from his son. He was a Colonel in the Korean War and was evacuated for an unknown explanation in 1953. He met Ruth the same year and they were expecting Eric and had to get married. He first appeared in "Seven Is Enough" where he and Ruth went on their annual visit to the Camdens, where they always bring candy that their grandkids dislike. During their visit, they go to a hardware store with Annie, Mary, and Lucy. The cashier, Emma, has rings that are a replica of Annie's stolen ones. She suspected this but then excused this thought. The Colonel visits Eric at the church and was forced to put a cigar away because of a church rule. He suspected someone was in the room, and sure enough, a homeless orphan named George was hiding there. The Colonel and Ruth adopted him after Eric let them. He later appears in "It's About George..." where George's father wants his son back. He did not want this to happen, so he was willing to sue. Eric later creates a compromise and he accepts. He also met Jimmy Moon in this episode, where he and Ruth scared him, but later apologized. He thought that Julie hated him and that he lost all of his children. Julie later confronts him and tells him that she loves him. He and Grandma Ruth buy Eric an RV In the season 11 finale though he is not actually seen on screen.

"Grandma Ruth" Camden (Barbara Rush) is Eric's mother. She first appeared in "Seven Is Enough" on an annual trip to the Camdens. She gave Lucy the first letter that The Colonel gave to her and both Mary and Lucy read it. She and The Colonel later adopted George at the end of the episode. In "It's About George..." she hears that George's father wants him back, and gets upset. She blamed Julie for this, but then apologized. She also met Jimmy Moon in this episode, where she and The Colonel scared him, but later apologized.

George Grayson (Camden) (Sam Saletta) is a homeless orphan who went from one foster home to the next until he was found in Eric's office. At first, Eric and Annie wanted to adopt him, but The Colonel and Ruth became his adopted parents, thereby becoming Eric's brother. In "It's About George..." he meets his real father. He gets upset and would rather live at the orphanage. His dad later moves in with him, at The Colonel and Ruth's in Buffalo. In "Tit for Tat", it is revealed that he is a private in the army and went to Iraq. It was also revealed that he married Jane, who ironically had stayed at the Camdens.

The two had dates at the Camden house under Eric and Annie’s supervision, because they felt they could not trust Robbie. After a while, Robbie convinced Eric and Annie to let him take Mary to the coffee shop his parents met at for Valentine’s Day. The coffee shop turned out to be a motel. Mary punched him and left. He came back a few months later to try and win back Mary. The two got back together, got engaged, and planned to move in together. However, Robbie’s ex-girlfriend, Cheryl, saw him and Mary together and realized that he had been two-timing her. She told Mary and Mary broke up with him because she needed to figure out her life and that did not include Robbie.

Robbie came back a few months later with Cheryl, asking if Eric would marry the two of them because she was pregnant, which was not true, and the two were living together in Cheryl’s apartment. Eric later found Robbie living on the streets and Robbie told him that the only reason he was going to marry Cheryl was because she was pregnant and when he found out she wasn’t, he left, but had nowhere to go. Eric invited Robbie to stay in the Camden house, which did not go over very well with the rest of the family. But in time, everyone came to treat Robbie like a member of the family. He and Mary started dating again and she planned to come home from New York for the summer to be with him. However, her old boyfriend, Wilson West, came to beg Mary to stay in New York with him. She chose to be with Wilson, and she left Robbie heartbroken.

While on the rebound from Mary, Robbie started to date Lucy, who was on the rebound from her ex-fiancé, Jeremy. They dated only a short time before they realized that being together was awkward. Robbie then began to date Joy Reyes. Mary and Lucy became jealous of Joy and each tried to win him back. Joy broke up with Robbie, and again, he was left heartbroken. He dated Roxanne Richardson, who he had known since grade seven, for a short while before leaving the Camden house to live in Florida and take care of his sick mother. Robbie has an older brother, Ronald, and a younger brother, Rick.

Peter Petrowski

Peter Petrowski (2002, 2006) (Scotty Leavenworth) is a neighbor to the Camdens; the son of Vic and Paris.

Peter was Ruthie's boyfriend in middle school. His father, Vic, was an alcoholic who left his mother when he was young. In the episode "Smoking" it is revealed that Peter smokes. He decides to stop smoking later in the episode because he knows Ruthie doesn't like that he smokes. His father returns sober in the episode "The Prodigal Father" and both Peter and his mother forgive him. When Peter is caught drinking, Vic is very upset with him and gives him a lecture on how he doesn't want Peter to make the same mistakes that he himself made. Eventually Peter's mother and father get back together, despite the fact that Peter had previously hoped that his mother would marry Chandler, who she had been dating before the return of her ex-husband. It is revealed in the season nine premiere that Peter moves away with his parents the summer before Ruthie starts high school. Ruthie is upset about this but eventually moves on from it. He is not seen again until the episode "Leaps of Faith" when Peter's parents, who are having another baby, ask Reverend Camden to marry them. He appears one last time in the episode "Highway to Cell", when Reverend Camden gives Ruthie's cell number to Vic and Vic convinces Peter to call Ruthie. peter and Ruthie have a conversation that hints that peter is still in love with her and Ruthie does not know how she feels anymore. Fans believed that they got back together for a little while but that all changed after Ruthie met T-Bone.

Roxanne Richardson

Roxanne Richardson (2002–2004) (Rachel Blanchard) is Kevin's partner, the object of much of Lucy's jealousy but later become close friends with Lucy and they set up girls nights out where Lucy tells Roxanne what's going on in her life with her husband. She was an old crush of Robbie, and Chandler's girlfriend. Later on, Roxanne reveals that she will be going to Iraq.

Cecilia Smith

Cecilia Smith (2002–2004) (Ashlee Simpson) is Simon's girlfriend, who then dates Martin. She later dumps Martin, who loved her but she was not sure she felt the same. Another reason (which is not very clearly shown) might be that she thought Simon was returning—whereas he only came for vacations—and they might get back together (because it would no longer be a long-distance relationship). When Simon came home at the end of season eight, it was vaguely revealed that their relationship did not work out, because over the summer Cecilia went away to college, and it was only when Simon began dating and having sex with Georgia in season nine that it was revealed that they had broken up. (However, fans have believed that Simon's wife is actually Cecilia. They never talked after she left, but after Simon and Rose decided not to get married—because Rose still had feelings for her ex-boyfriend)

Martin Brewer

Martin Brewer (2003–2007) (Tyler Hoechlin) is the only son of the Marine, Beau Brewer. His mother died when he was young and, until he was 16, he lived with his Aunt Betsy. During his sophomore year in high school the Brewers moved to Glen Oak.

Martin walked into the Camdens' life by chance and joined the already-growing over-glut of teen boys there. He followed Ruthie and her then boyfriend Peter to the Camden house and everyone assumed that he was a friend of Simon's, except Simon who thought he was there to see his dad. While Martin's aunt, an aspiring fashion designer, wanted the two of them to move to New York, Eric managed to convince her to let Martin stay with them so as not to uproot him again.

Martin's favorite sport is baseball and has been scouted by both colleges and professional baseball teams. One team even offered him a contract during his sophomore year in high school (which he eventually turned down to complete his education). Martin lived with the Camdens for two years before his father's tour in Iraq finally ended and he returned home.

He also had fixed, rigid beliefs about sexuality and was staunchly conservative, which pleased most of the Camdens, except Simon. When Martin snooped into Simon's private affairs, Martin carped at Simon about the "evils" of non-marital sex when he found out that Simon was sexually active.

Prior to his senior year in high school, while visiting Simon Camden, Martin met and, not practicing what he preached about pre-marital sex, had sex one time with a girl named Sandy Jameson. The event resulted in Sandy getting pregnant.

Martin graduated a semester early and with the assistance of Eric and his high school baseball coach to start college. He now lives near Sandy and their son. While Martin was not in the Season 10 finale, Sandy makes an appearance after the failed wedding of Simon and Rose. The episode ends with Sandy telling Simon she needs to speak with him. Much speculation surrounded this, that it was in fact Simon's baby. Ruthie falls in love with Martin in the meantime. Finally, near the end of season 11, Martin declares his love for Ruthie, but then Ruthie had a choice, between Martin and T-Bone. At the end despite all they've been through she decided to go with T-Bone, leaving Martin heartbroken.

Meredith Davis

Meredith Davis-Smith (2004–2005) (Megan Henning) is Martin's ex-girlfriend, who broke up with him after he told her about Sandy and the baby. Meredith and her siblings were taken in by Cecilia's parents.

Sandy Jameson

Sandy Jameson (2005–2007) (Haylie Duff) was introduced in the season 10 premiere as Simon's fiancée Rose's best friend, to whom Martin lost his virginity the previous summer. In the season opener Sandy reveals she might be pregnant. She turns out to be pregnant, and gives birth to a baby boy named Aaron (after Martin's grandfather and also quite possibly producer Aaron Spelling). In the season ten finale, she had to speak with Simon, possibly about the baby's paternity. In season 11, Sandy meets Jonathon, a doctor, and he proposes. Together, they decided to get married, but having gone on the RV vacation, it is unknown whether or not they got married and stayed together.

Rosanna "Rose" Taylor

Rose Taylor (2005–2006) (Sarah Thompson) was introduced in the season nine finale "Mi Familia Part 1" as Simon's current girlfriend. The two were not necessarily serious but she seemed eager to engage and marry, pressuring Simon into proposing. When at first he refused she took it as disinterest in her and backed away, provoking him to commit to marrying her. By season 10 they were engaged and she was making wedding plans. The initial plan was for the two to engage at the end of their current school year and wed at the end of the following year, but she pressured him into moving the engagement date forward. During Rose's time on the show, she became a very disliked person by all except for Sandy Jameson, who was her one friend there. Rose was known for being selfish, rude, inconsiderate, and thoughtless, rubbing Eric and Annie the wrong way more than anyone.

By 2006, Simon and Rose changed plans to marry in May, something they both wanted to be ready for but still held insecurities and doubts. Annie, however, had decided that they could not marry, and when an ex-boyfriend of Rose's surfaced in March, she saw an opportunity. Though most had come to accept Simon dating Rose, no one knew her at all, and it was this boyfriend who convinced Rose that she was not being a good person. In the April 2006 episode Invitation to Disaster, she had a sit-down confession with Annie, explaining that she had been unaware of how she was acting and that her relationship with her parents and never really being disciplined or close to them at all was part of the reason. This provoked Annie to see her in a different light, and while she and Annie took on a mother/daughter relationship, no one else was crazy about them marrying. It was her ex-boyfriend Umberto who made her realize she was not ready to marry and that he still had feelings for her. So although they had gotten to the wedding day, they ended up parting ways amicably. It is unknown whether they still keep in touch.

Minor recurring characters

Gladys Bink (Eileen Brennan) first appeared in the pilot episode, "Anything You Want" where Eric paid her to pretend she lost a lung, breathing on an oxygen tank, and trying to still smoke cigarettes. This trick made Matt quit smoking. Later, she appeared in "With a Little Help from My Friends" where Matt helped her with a few things around the house. However, Matt did not want his parents to know he did not help Mrs. Bink with getting her money on a high shelf. As a result, Mrs. Bink took a hard fall and ended up in the hospital. Later, Matt and Eric visited her. In "Dangerous Liaisons, Part 2" she visited Mary at the hospital and persuaded Annie's father to solve the problem by using her "ways" (i.e. lying). She has been a member of the Glen Oak Community Church for many years, and has a reputation of being an excellent fundraiser. She was diagnosed with cancer at the end of season seven. Chandler moved into her guest house, where he helped her with certain things. Chandler was the minister who married Gladys and Fred, who would be her third husband. Fred's mother however, did not approve of the marriage. She even confronted Eric with this. She is the longest recurring character on the show.

Beau Brewer (Costas Mandylor) is Martin Brewer's father who served in Iraq. When he came home for three days, he did not speak to Martin until the last day. He has a hard time talking to Martin before he leaves, because it may be his last conversation. Beau came home in the Season 9 finale after two tours with Iraq and in the season 10 premiere it is mentioned that he started up a landscaping business.

Betsy Brewer (Keri Lynn Pratt) is Martin's aunt with whom he was staying in Glen Oak while his dad was off fighting for their country.

In "Dangerous Liaisons, Part 2," Eric "lures" Matt to a cafe where deaf people work and eat. Matt meets Heather there and they eventually apologize and say they want to get to know each other. In season two, she goes away to school in Philadelphia and breaks up with Matt. She returns in season three and says she's getting married, but in the season finale, she runs off with Matt on the day of her wedding and breaks up with her fiancee after he cheated on her with another woman. In season four, she transfers to Crawford College while Matt was in a relationship with Shana. In the season finale, she tells Matt that she still loves him and he breaks up with Shana. Matt and Heather then reconcile, and decide to elope, but in the season five premiere, it's revealed that Heather left him at the altar and they break up again. She later reveals to Matt that she has another boyfriend. In the sixth season, Heather reveals that she broke up with her boyfriend and is moving to New York. Matt later meets her on a plane flight to Glen Oak in season eight and she reveals that she's divorced and is going back to Glen Oak to start over. They soon decide to have dinner together as friends.

Cheryl (Barret Swatek) is Robbie's ex-girlfriend, whom he almost married. Cheryl also dated Matt for a short while.

Mary and Corey were good friends until Corey started dating Wilson, Mary's long time flame. Corey had a daughter at 14. Wilson and Corey are married as we hear from Wilson in the season nine episode "Fathers."

Lou Dalton (Alan Fudge) works for Glen Oak Community Church. He first appeared in "Faith, Hope and the Bottom Line" where he did not like the fact that Eric was going to hire an ex-convict to work as the new organ player (since Mrs. Hinkles retired). He later said that he would wait and see what happens, thereby giving the organ player a chance. He resigned as head deacon and moved away from Glen Oak in season eleven.

Daniel (Aaron Staton) is Sandy's friend at school, who was introduced in "Turn, Turn, Turn." He later tells Sandy that he is in love with her, and wants to be her boyfriend. This upsets Sandy, and so she calls Eric for advice. He is mentioned in "You Take the High Road," where Sandy desperately tries to break up with him by getting advice from Lucy.

Frankie (Chyler Leigh) is Mary's friend who got in trouble for drinking, has a daughter named Mercy, has a husband named Johnny, skipped college and eventually left town without her family.

Will Grayson (William Katt) appeared in "It's About George..." He was a detective in 1986, who testified in a court which resulted in him leaving the country. He had a son whom his wife had, dying while in labor. He put his child up for adoption and left the country. Ten years later, he returns to the U.S. and confronts Eric. It is revealed that he is George's father. He later meets George and is offered a home with The Colonel and Ruth Camden. He gives Julie a ride back to Buffalo, New York.

Odile Hinkle (Peg Phillips) is a neighbor and best friend on Mrs. Bink. In "We The People", Mrs. Hinkle provides a rest stop for erstwhile newspaper delivery kids Simon and Ruthie, then literally rides to their rescue. In "Says Who?", Mrs. Hinkle disappears from her house to a seniors' residence without informing close friends. Rev. Camden and Mrs. Bink covertly investigate her disappearance.

Georgia Huffington (Rheagan Wallace) is Simon's ex-girlfriend who shared an intimate relationship with him. The relationship ended because Georgia lied about being pregnant.

Jane (Sarah Mason) is a homeless girl who stays at the Camdens. Her father left her mother, and her mother met a man on the internet who lives with them, but threatened to harm Jane, causing her to run away from home. Her parents smoked pot when she was younger. She tried to get a room at the home for teenage mothers (despite not actually being pregnant), but Lucy turned her down. She then went to Eric, and he let her and her friend stay in the garage apartment. She got a job at the Dairy Shack in "Broken Hearts and Promises." In "You Take the High Road" it is revealed that she was married to a soldier (and in "Tit for Tat" that she married George, Eric's adopted brother) three weeks prior to the episode's events, then tried to hide from her husband. She later resolved this issue with the help of Kevin. She tried to divorce her husband in "And I'll Take the Low Road." However, he did not show up. While arguing with T-Bone about his mother coming to see him, she blurted out Eric's heart problems in the promenade. In "Thanks and Giving," she and T-Bone insisted that a salesman donate a bed for Eric and Annie. They both liked it, not knowing it was donated. In the series finale, she announced that her mom is in rehab and her mom's boyfriend is in jail as he broke his probation.

Jeff (Ryan Bittle) first appeared in the pilot episode, "Anything You Want." He is Matt's best friend since age six and Mary's crush since age ten. While jogging with Lucy, Mary runs into him and Jeff asks her if she wants help with her foul shot. He later goes over to the Camden house and shoots baskets with Mary, while Matt spies on him. In the episode, "In the Blink of an Eye," Jeff asks Mary to go to a party with him, which Mary was not allowed to, then he asked her to go to an R-rated movie in which Mary knew she was not allowed to go to. In "No Funerals and a Wedding" Jeff attended the memorial service at the Camdens where he wanted to talk to Mary. Later, Lucy told him that she was sorry they broke up, even though Mary had not dumped him.

Johnny (Nathan West) is Frankie's husband; Pete's nephew, who ended up being a single parent.

Jordan (Wade Carpenter) briefly dated both Mary and Lucy (though the show focuses more on his relationship with the latter). He is first seen playing basketball with Mary. Later when a teacher catches Lucy slapping Jordan, Mary covers and says they were rehearsing a scene from Gone With The Wind. After finding out that Jordan and Mary intend to go to a co-ed sleepover for the basketball teams, a jealous Lucy tries to seduce Jordan into having sex with her though she is only fifteen. Matt catches them kissing and takes Lucy home before anything else can happen. In the season three finale, Jordan reveals that he still loves Mary but doesn't want to hurt Lucy. Lucy overhears this and Jordan and Mary renew their relationship causing a rift between the sisters. Later that day, the feuding siblings and their boyfriends engage in a kissing contest until Eric's sister Julie tells the boys to "go home". After this Jordan disappears. In a season four conversation with Simon Mary says "We don't speak of him" referring to Jordan, who from there on is only mentioned under the alias "Big Lips"

Mac (Kyle Searles) is Martin's best friend. He was dating Pam when he first appeared in the series. He rented an apartment with Jane and Margaret in season eleven. He is engaged to Margaret. Margaret is pregnant with his child and they will soon get married.

Margaret (Andrea Morris) is Jane's very shy friend. She got highly emotional when Annie called the paramedics because she thought something was wrong with Eric. She got a job at the Dairy Shack in "Broken Hearts and Promises." She reveals to T-Bone in "You Take the High Road" that Jane called his mother and she is coming to see him. She later revealed her past in "And I'll Take the Low Road." Her father abused her mother and so she ended up going from home to home. She did not want to say the wrong thing and get abused so she became shy. In "Thanks and Giving," she helped Sam and David prepare the song, "This Land is Our Land" for Eric, Annie, and Ruthie's homecoming. In that episode she revealed she wanted to teach Pre-K. In the series finale, she was offered a scholarship to a college. She turned it down and decided to go on the roadtrip with the Camdens. She is engaged to Mac and later becomes pregnant with his baby during the roadtrip they took with the Camdens. They will get married in a while.

Ms. Margo (Rachel Boston) is Sam and David's teacher who first appeared in "A Pain in the Neck." She felt attracted to Eric, forcing Sam and David to tell her that Eric is their grandfather. This was soon resolved, and Ms. Margo then asked to go out for dinner with Eric and the twins. Eric resisted her advances, and ended up taking Sam and David out of the school and homeschooling them. Ben tried hitting on her that same day. Later, she popped up at the Camdens' door, much to the annoyance of Eric.

In "Happy's Valentine," Eric and Morgan called him from a camping trip to check out the kids at the house. He caught his son with beer and sent him home thereby ending the wild party. He then notified Matt that Happy was hit by a car, and he took her to Abbott Animal Hospital. He also informed Eric when Simon got in the car accident. He was Kevin's boss when he worked as a police officer. He was later promoted to Detective then to Captain. In "Faith, Hope and the Bottom Line," he and Officer McGuire rushed over to the Camdens' after Ruthie called "911" because Simon was hiding in his room. He told Ruthie not to call that number unless it was an emergency. He was promoted to police chief of Glen Oak near the end of season 11.

Jimmy Moon (Matthew Linville) (introduced in the episode, "Family Secrets") is Lucy's first boyfriend. In the episode, "In the Blink of an Eye," he and Lucy go on their first date by watching a French film in the Camdens' living room. However, Eric messes this up by playing country songs. In "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil," he wanted to break up with Lucy because of a school class president election. He later withdrew followed by Lucy because they wanted to stay together. In "Happy's Valentine," he took Lucy, Simon, Nigel, Ruthie, and Lynn to the movies. He and Lucy saw a separate movie (a French film) for their first Valentine's together. His grades in science started to drop, and so Lucy told Mary to tutor him in "Faith, Hope and the Bottom Line." Lucy regretted this, because she thought that Mary was going to steal her boyfriend. The issue is resolved at the end of the episode. In "It's About George..." he meets The Colonel and Grandma Ruth Camden, who he declares to be the scariest people he ever met. He breaks up with Lucy in "Dangerous Liaisons, Part 1" after she changed her hair color. The next year, Lucy got jealous of anyone with Jimmy Moon. She finally got to decide between her old boyfriend and her new one. She did not get either of them. He was introduced in And Tonight's Specials Are... when he had pizza with Lucy, which upset Kevin. Two months prior to his stay at the Camdens, T-Bone breaks into Glen Oak Community Church to sleep and use the bathroom, since his father is dead, and his mother ran away. Upon staying at the Camdens, T-Bone told Eric that he vaguely knows about what is going on with his health.
