KHJL is a commercial radio station in Thousand Oaks, California, broadcasting to the Ventura-Oxnard, California area on 92.7 FM.

KAJL is a commercial radio station in Adelanto, California, broadcasting to the Victor Valley, California area on 92.7 FM.

KJLL-FM/KHJL/KAJL air an adult hits music format branded as "Jill-FM". The playlist differs from the traditional adult hits music formatted radio stations across the country including cross-town KCBS-FM which is branded as "Jack FM" as "Jill-FM" airs more female friendly artists.

The station is fully automated with voice overs recorded by a Canadian actress.

Before "Jill FM," this was "Lite FM," with an adult contemporary format. For one season, it was even the flagship station of the Los Angeles Clippers (National Basketball Association).

History

KHJL

KHJL signed on in 1963 with the call letters KNJO, broadcasting from a studio in the Park Oaks shopping center in Thousand Oaks, California. The station's claim to fame at the time was that it was the first FM radio station on the West Coast to broadcast in stereo. KNJO was a community radio station regarded as a training ground for new talent. For a time, the studio technician was 10 year old Steve Webb, who is now the founder of Radio Brandy.

KHJL was required to move their transmitter off of Rasnow Peak due to the move of KJLL-FM to Fountain Valley which caused a shadow in Simi Valley which KHJL is required to serve with a city-grade signal. Without first consulting the city, KHJL moved the transmitter to one of the old 850 AM towers, but the city demanded that the transmitter be moved again. The lease on the land, on which the towers sat, was up and could not be renewed. The city then knocked down the towers and built houses on the location. KHJL now broadcasts from a less than desirable location delivering a poor signal in Santa Clarita, California where KHJL used to be one of the strongest FM signals on the dial.

KHJL added a translator on Castro Peak at 38 watts near Malibu, California, and recently obtained a construction permit to increase the power to 45 watts.

KJLL-FM

KJLL-FM signed on in 1993 with the call letters KRCI then KLIT, (later changed to the present KJLL) originally broadcasting from Catalina Island at 3,000 watts entering a simulcast of KHJL. The simulcast aired a beautiful music format that later evolved into an adult contemporary music format branded as "Lite 92.7".

KJLL-FM was later purchased by Amaturo Group and turned into a trimulcast with KAJL, which was originally located in Riverside, California.

KJLL-FM was moved to Fountain Valley, California with a change of transmitter location, broadcasting from a mountain south of Newport Beach, California at 690 watts. This provided a better signal coverage of the interior portions of Orange County, California.

KAJL

KAJL signed on in 1959 with the call letters KHNY, originally broadcasting from Riverside, California at 6,000 watts.

KHNY adopted numerous music formats and call letters until a trimulcast of KJLL-FM/KHJL was created airing the beautiful music format and station branding of the sister stations as "Lite 92.7".

KAJL moved from Riverside, California to Adelanto, California, to serve the Victor Valley, California area. KAJL broadcasts from the same mountain as most of Victor Valley, California radio stations. The station no longer has a listenable signal in the Riverside-San Bernardino area. In order to make the move, Amaturo Group paid 92.7 KZIQ from Ridgecrest, California to move their tower off the mountain and down into Ridgecrest, California. KZIQ's signal does not extend much past Ridgecrest, California to prevent interference with KAJL.

Format Change

Since the coverage area had been shifted after the moves of all 3 transmitters, and with the arrival of Jack FM on KCBS-FM, Amaturo Group dismissed the airstaff of "Lite 92.7" abandoning the music format in favor of an automated adult hits music format branded as "Jill-FM".
