Veerbhadra or Virbhadra (वीरभद्र) is a town in Dehradun district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, situated close the pilgrimage town of Rishikesh.

It is most known as the factory township of Indian Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Rishikesh plant (IDPL), a Govt. of India undertaking, established in 1967, with about 2700 houses [ [http://www.idpl.gov.in/rishikesh_plant.html Rishikesh Plant] ] , with Inter College and a Kendriya Vidyalaya, established in 2003 [ [http://kvrishikesh.org/aboutus.html History - KV, Virbhadra, Rishikesh] .]

The town also has a Neem Karoli Baba Ashram and a Sri Hanuman Mandir. Very Near to the town is the beautiful Irrigation Dam which act as a water reservoir for the Chilla Hydro power plant . The Dam is also famous because through it goes the motorable road to the Neelkanth temple .

Geography

History

It is named after, "Virabhadra", a being created through the wrath of Shiva, after the yagya, of Daksha, at Kankhal, an ancient Shiv temple, known as Virbhadra Temple, dedicated to him is situated with in town. Virbhadra is famous for the first government pharmaceutical plant, Indian Drugs and Pharmaceutical Limited (IDPL)

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Virbhadra had a population of 13,271. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Virbhadra has an average literacy rate of 81%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 86%, and female literacy is 75%. In Veerbhadra, 8% of the population is under 6 years of age.
