United States Global AIDS Coordinator

United States Global AIDS Coordinator

The Global AIDS Coordinator at the U.S. State Department is the official responsible for overseeing U.S.-sponsored humanitarian aid programs to combat the AIDS epidemic in Africa and Asia. The office is presently held by Ambassador Mark R. Dybul, sworn in on August 11, 2006. [http://www.state.gov/s/gac/about/38490.htm]

The Coordinator's Office's mission is to lead implementation of the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Emergency Plan/PEPFAR). The Emergency Plan is the largest commitment ever by any nation for an international health initiative dedicated to a single disease -- a five-year, $15 billion, comprehensive approach to combating the disease around the world. The Coordinator's Office is also one of the few offices at the State Department that reports directly to the Secretary of State, instead of going through the Deputy Secretary of State.
