It was designated "Highway 55" following the incorporation of the Regional Municipality of Niagara. It is the primary road in Virgil.Previously, Highway 55 connected Hamilton's Kenilworth Avenue access to the "Mountain" (
Niagara Escarpment ) and the former Highway 53.Highway 55 was turned over to the Regional Municipality on
April 1 ,1997 , and is now mostly Niagara Regional Road 55.References
