Anderson School of Management (University of New Mexico)

= History of The Anderson School of Management at UNM =

The University of New Mexico (UNM) College of Business Administration was established in 1947 and received its first AACSB accreditation in 1975. UNM was only the third university to gain professional AACSB accreditation for both their bachelor’s and master’s level management programs simultaneously.

In 1968, the University of New Mexico Board of Regents approved the formation of The Robert O. Anderson School of Management (“Anderson”) as a named school. This was the first time a New Mexico state school or college had been named in honor of a prominent citizen, and Anderson was the first professional school of management to be established within New Mexico. At that time, Anderson employed 15 tenure-track faculty members under Dean Robert Rehder. Today Anderson employs 42 tenure-track faculty members under Dean Amy Wohlert.

Recently the Robert O. Anderson Schools of Management have faced some scrutiny for practices that triggered audits by The University of New Mexico. One such case focused on a faculty member's outside consulting work that exceeded policies established by the university [http://www.abqjournal.com/news/metro/306014metro05-12-08.htm] . The audit found that all faculty found in violation of the policy had exceeded the consulting limitations with the approval of university administration.

On February 22, 2007, then-Dean, Dr. Charles Crespy, resigned his position as Dean of the Anderson Schools of Management. His resignation followed a no-confidence vote held by the faculty in the summer of 2006. 23 faculty indicated a vote of no-confidence from the 42 members that voted [http://www.abqjournal.com/news/metro/540294metro02-22-07.htm] [http://www.abqjournal.com/education/475987metro07-14-06.htm] .

Following the no-confidence vote by the faculty, The University of New Mexico initiated an audit looking into outside employment by faculty members. Some faculty felt that the audit was a result of the no-confidence vote and was a retaliatory tactic [http://www.abqjournal.com/news/metro/502774metro10-19-06.htm] [http://www.abqjournal.com/opinion/editorials/478647opinion07-26-06.htm] .

Anderson has continued to evolve and today offers a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree and three masters-level degree options: MBA, Executive MBA (EMBA), and Master of Accounting (MACCT).

MBA and BBA Programs

The MBA and BBA programs at The Anderson School are based on strong, continually evolving core curricula which challenge students to keep pace with current management concerns and opportunities.

"Concentrations described below are offered at both the BBA and MBA levels, unless otherwise noted."

Accounting

At the graduate level, Anderson’s accounting concentration allows students to study a range of issues, including corporate taxation, auditing/assurance, international accounting practices, estate taxation, and forensic accounting.

Anderson accounting faculty actively engage students within and outside of the classroom. Professor Michele Chwastiak will serve as the Keynote Speaker for the 40th anniversary conference of Nebraskans for Peace (NFP) in November 2008, giving a talk on the financial costs of the Iraq war. Professor Richard Brody invites speakers from off campus to share their experience related to information assurance and accounting issues. Recent guest lecturers have included Allen Ezell, retired FBI special agent, and George B. Tselentis, a security auditor.

Financial Management

Anderson Financial Management MBA students have the opportunity to explore corporate finance, investment management, and financial services (including banking) in depth. Students in Anderson’s graduate-level Finance Practicum course manage two portfolios totaling more than $7 million, one of the highest dollar value student-lead investment funds in the United States.

Information Assurance (MBA level only)

Anderson’s Information Assurance concentration offers students coursework in fraud examination, internal auditing, information system security, and forensic accounting. Many students combine their studies in information assurance with studies in Accounting or Management Information Systems (MIS).

In April 2008, the FBI announced that the state of New Mexico, in partnership with the UNM Police Department, UNM Information Technology Services Department (ITS), and the UNM Anderson School of Management's NSA-certified Center for Information Assurance Research and Education, CIARE, has been awarded the nation's 15th [http://www.rcfl.gov/ Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory (RCFL)] .cite web | title=Director Mueller Announces New Regional Computer Forensics Laboratories in Los Angeles and Albuquerque | year=April 28, 2008 | publisher=Federal Bureau of Investigation | url=http://www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel08/rcfl042808.htm | accessdate=2008-07-08]

New Mexico’s RCFL will be located on the UNM Main Campus in Albuquerque.

Anderson’s CIARE was established in 2006 by the University of New Mexico to promote regional advancement of information assurance (IA) and information security (InfoSec) through educational coursework, development of sound business practices, and peer-reviewed research. UNM was designated a [http://www.nsa.gov/ia/academia/caeiae.cfm Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance] by the NSA and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in spring 2007.cite web | title=NSA and DHS Announce the 2007 Designation of the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education | year=June 28, 2007 | publisher=National Security Agency | url=http://www.nsa.gov/releases/academic_excellence.cfm | accessdate=2008-07-08]

International Management and International Management in Latin America

Albuquerque’s diverse cultural landscape, its proximity to multiple Native American communities, and its relative closeness to Latin America expose students to wide-ranging cultural traditions and create unique opportunities for the study of management across cultural and national lines. Anderson offers a general International Management concentration at the BBA and MBA levels and a more specialized concentration in International Management in Latin America at the MBA level.

Anderson works to actively enrich its relationships with indigenous tribes, both within communities directly served by UNM and across the Americas. To this end, Anderson organizes an annual conference entitled [http://fibeamanaus.mgt.unm.edu/ Fostering Indigenous Business and Entrepreneurship in the Americas (FIBEA)] . Similar in focus to a handful of other conferences, including the [http://turtletalk.wordpress.com/2008/05/07/lewis-clark-indigenous-economic-development-conference-podcast-now-available/ Fourth Annual Lewis & Clark Law Review Symposium (U.S.)] , the [http://www.ainumosir2008.com/en/news.html Indigenous Peoples Summit in Ainu Mosir (Japan) 2008] , the [http://www.sharingindigenouswisdom.org/ Sharing Indigenous Wisdom Conference (U.S.)] , and the [http://www.conferenceworks.net.au/kbn/ Indigenous Economic Development Conference (Australia)] , FIBEA is unique in its specific focus on business and economic development concerns and its aim to unite indigenous peoples across the Americas in mutual support. In 2007, FIBEA was held at Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico. FIBEA 2008 takes place in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil.

Management of Technology (MOT) (MBA level only)

An emerging field of study focused on bringing high-tech products and services to the larger marketplace, Management of Technology (MOT) affords students opportunities to study technology transfer, startup technology business planning, sound economic development strategies, regional investment approaches, and other facets of new product commercialization. Anderson’s Management of Technology MBA program is ranked in the top 10 in the U.S. by a study published in [http://www.pdma.org/ The Journal of Product Innovation Management] .cite journal | last = Linton | first = Jonathan D. | title = Perspective: Ranking Business Schools on the Management of Technology | journal = Journal of Product Innovation Management | issue = 21 | pages = 416-430 | publisher = Product Development & Management Association | location = Mount Laurel, NJ | date = 2004 ]

The Anderson School’s Endowed Chair in Economic Development, currently held by Dr. Suleiman Kassicieh, Professor of MOT, initiates and oversees a wide range of economic development initiatives within the school. One such project is the UNM Technology Business Plan Competition, offering $40,000 in annual prizes and additional venture capital funding for student teams who compose the strongest technology business plans. Because of UNM’s faculty research activities and its proximity to Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Anderson students have a wealth of licensable technology on which to draw for startup business creation. A second initiative bridging students’ work to the external community, the UNM Small Business Institute (SBI) at Anderson links Albuquerque area businesses with graduate and undergraduate students, who provide free management consulting guided by faculty mentors.

Marketing Management

In addition to their regular coursework, Anderson marketing students regularly engage in external competitions and design projects which boost their level of real-world experience and offer first-hand exposure to potential employers.

In the spring of 2008, UNM was chosen as one of 11 universities to participate in the Green Means Go educational program sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).cite web | title=APTA’s Green Means Go Campaign | publisher=American Public Transportation Association (2008) | url=http://www.apta.com/about/committees/market/green_means_go.cfm | accessdate=2008-07-08] Anderson students developed Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and other communications that promote the environmental advantages of public transportation. The resulting concepts are created for use by transit systems across the United States.

Anderson MBA marketing students have competed in the Cadillac National Case Study Competition and placed in the top 2 spots for three years running. They came home winners in 2005 and 2006cite web | title=EdVenture Partners Congratulates Top Performers | year=June 9, 2006 | url=http://www.edventurepartners.com/aboutUs/june9_06.asp | accessdate=2008-07-08] , and they placed second in 2007.cite web | title=Scholastic Achievement Awards, Spring 2007 | publisher=EdVenture Partners (2008) | url=http://www.edventurepartners.com/aboutUs/saa.asp | accessdate=2008-07-08]

Dual-Degree MBA Programs

The University of New Mexico Anderson School of Management offers three dual-degree MBA programs which allow students flexibility to pursue a second advanced degree in conjunction with their MBA. These programs are the dual MBA/Juris Doctor (J.D.) program, the dual MBA/Engineering program, and the dual MBA/Latin American Studies (M.A.) program.

UNM Interdisciplinary Film & Digital Media Program (IFDM)]

Developing alongside Albuquerque’s booming film industry, the Interdisciplinary Film & Digital Media Program (IFDM) at The University of New Mexico provides undergraduate students rigorous training in the creative and technical skills required for work with 21st-century cinematic technologies. The Anderson School, in conjunction with the UNM College of Fine Arts, offers an IFDM program of study which integrates marketing, finance, and other business disciplines with filmmaking and cinematic processing skills.

EMBA Program

Anderson’s EMBA program is tailored to working professionals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field. The every-other-weekend format and cohort-based curriculum provides a tight-knit classroom atmosphere throughout the intensive two-year program.

MACCT Program

For students seeking a more specialized program in accounting than the MBA and BBA accounting concentrations offer, The Anderson School has a Master of Accounting program, with a variety of study paths tailored to the students’ needs.

The Professional Concentration is an option for individuals who have a non-accounting undergraduate degree and wish to enter public accounting as a certified professional. The Advanced Concentration may be undertaken by individuals who have already earned a BBA with a concentration in accounting, and the Tax Concentration is tailored to individuals who have a BBA with a concentration in accounting and who wish to pursue advanced studies in taxation.
