"The Soul Sessions" is the debut album by English soul singer Joss Stone, released in September 2003 (see 2003 in music). It is a collection of cover versions of '60s and '70s soul songs and a cover of a modern artist, re-arranged into a soul song.

Background

"The Soul Sessions" was produced by Miami soul singer Betty Wright and S-Curve Records CEO Steve Greenberg. She worked with veteran Miami soul musicians Benny Lattimore, Little Beaver, Timmy Thomas, and Wright herself. She also worked with contemporary musicians such as neo soul singer Angie Stone and the hip hop group The Roots.

Stone told MTV News that she felt intimidated by the credentials of the musicians that worked on the album. "It was weird because they've worked with so many great, great singers I'm talking the best. I kind of walked in, just like this little girl and started singing." By the end of the session, she had impressed everybody with her talent.

Chart performance

"The Soul Sessions" entered the UK Albums Chart at number forty-seven the week of 17 January 2004 as the highest debut of the week, peaking at number four three weeks later. It spent five weeks in the UK top twenty as from late February 2004, and went triple platinum by the BPI in April 2005. Moreover, it became the UK's nineteenth best-selling album of 2004. In the United States, it made the top forty of the "Billboard" 200 and the "Billboard" Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums in May 2004, and topped the "Billboard" Top Heatseekers. The album was also successful in Europe, where it charted inside the top ten and the top fifteen in several countries. It has sold over four million copies worldwide to date.
