At the top level of administration, the Eastern European country of Belarus is divided into six "voblasti" (or "voblastsi", meaning "provinces" or "regions") and the city of Minsk, a "horad" ("municipality"). At the second level, the "voblasti" are divided into "raioni" ("districts").

History
At the start of the 20th century, the boundary of the Belarusian lands were still being defined. The amount of territory that was called Belarus contained the entire provinces of Minsk and Mogilev, the most of Hrodna, parts of Vitebsk and the parts of Vilna (now in Lithuania).
