Delta Phi Kappa (ΔΦΚ) (also known as Deltas) is an Asian American interest sorority established at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. Actively involved in events though the school, community, and southern California region, the organization prides itself on the well-rounded and distinctive qualities of each of its members. Because deltas are a single-chartered organization at USC, its active members all become USC alumni and remain closely connected to its sisters as well as the USC Trojan network.

History

In the spring of 1960, eleven Asian-coeds of the University of Southern California organized the need to foster sisterhood among Asian women, and to stimulate an intercultural exchange among themselves and their fellow students at USC. These eleven charter members, with the help of Miss Shirley Barkeley, counselor of Women's Organizations, and the sponsor, Mrs. Theodore Chen, drew up the sorority constitution which was officially approved on May 6, 1960.

On June 10, 1960 these eleven young women were formally presented as the Delta Phi Kappa Sorority at the Thunderbird Hotel in El Segundo.

These charter members are:

  • President: Brenda Song
  • Vice President: Jean Chew
  • Secretary: Sandy Nakai
  • Treasurer: Merri Kita
  • Historian: Kathy Mayekawa
  • Mary Chow
  • Jeanie Mori
  • Janice Ouchi

About

Purpose

Since being established in 1960, Delta Phi Kappa has strived to foster sisterhood among Asian American women and to raise cultural awareness. Strong foundation built on philanthropy, academics, respect, culture, and sisterhood have allowed the sorority to persevere for over four decades. Deltas have continually supported the Asian American community through volunteer work, donations, political involvement, and spearheading cultural programs. As a whole, Deltas are a diverse group of well-rounded young women with five essential things in common: love for sisters, academic and career accomplishments, high aspirations, unbounded potential, and love of fun. As an organization, Delta Phi Kappa helps to shape its members into the women they want to become by providing advice, assistance, and most importantly, unwavering support.

Asian Greek Council

Delta Phi Kappa is an active charter of USC's Asian Greek Council (AGC). The USC Asian Greek Council is currently composed of three historically Asian sororities (including deltas) and two historically Asian fraternities.[1] In addition, Delta Phi Kappa is part of a larger network, the Southern California Asian Greek Council, which currently comprises seventeen other Asian-interest organizations all throughout Southern California. The Southern California Asian Greek Council was founded in 1982 by Delta Phi Kappa's brother fraternity, Gamma Epsilon Omega, in which the first president was a member of Delta Phi Kappa.

Although Delta Phi Kappa is an Asian-Interest sorority, the members do not limit themselves to solely Asian-interest organizations and events. In October 2005, members of Delta Phi Kappa and USC's Delta Delta Delta Panhellenic Sorority teamed up to learn about the history of traditional and mutlicultural Greek chapters and the similarities and differences between the two organizations. The discussion also focused on ideas on how to integrate the five Greek councils at USC.[2] Additionally, every year, the sorority plans events with various organizations part of USC's Panhellenic Council Sororities (PHC), Interfraternity Council Fraternities (IFC), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), and National Panhellenic Council Sororities (NPHC).
