George Bannerman Dealey Montessori Academy

George Bannerman Dealey Montessori Vanguard and International Academy is a school in north Dallas, Texas (USA). Dealey Montessori, which enrolls students in grades PK-8, is a part of the Dallas Independent School District.

About

Dealey is one of the two public Montessori schools in the Dallas Independent School District. Overall as a school, Dealey has received 'exemplary' and 'recognized' status from the Texas Education Agency. The school has a reputable chess club, which is one of the best in the Dallas Independent School District. Students from the club have won scholarships and cash awards. In addition, the school's orchestra regularly brings home trophies from the UIL Concert and Sightreading Competitions. The choir, piano classes, and music memory team have accomplished similar things. Many students have been selected to All-City and All-Region Orchestras. In academics, the school has placed in the top ten in the Dallas Independent School District Math Olympiads. The Math Club has also gone to the MathCounts math competition. The academic teams of Dealey have brought home countless medals at UIL Academics competitions. Students from Dealey have gone to district and regional science fairs and one Dealey student made it to the state finals of the National Geographic Geo Bee. Teams from Dealey have done well in the Stock Market Game. The school has participated in many FutureCity designing competitions, making as far as 2nd place in the region. The school's Destination Imagination and Odyssey of the Mind teams have made it to the state finals. In athletics, the school has lacrosse, basketball, tennis, soccer, and track teams. The track team has gone to the Hershey Track and Field national and state finals. Recently, the school celebrated its 50th anniversary with a notable parade and other festivities. Dealey has a soccer team for almost all the grade levels.

History

The school is named after George Bannerman Dealey, the founder of The Dallas Morning News.^{[citation needed]}

In 1991 Dallas ISD officials proposed that Hotchkiss Elementary School reopen as a neighborhood school during the 1992-1993 school year. The Montessori program previously at Hotchkiss would be moved to the former Dealey School.^[1] The proposed attendance boundary changes would make Hotchkiss a mostly African American school and cause the White student populations at three North Dallas elementary schools to increase.^[2] DISD officials said that Dealey could not have been reopened as a neighborhood elementary because it is too close in proximity to Kramer, Pershing, and Preston Hollow. At the time, Dealey was being leased to the city and used as a recreation center.^[1]

Parents from Kramer, Preston Hollow, and Rogers asked DISD to open a new school so that their schools could be relieved.^[1] Several trustees supporting the move wanted to retain the support of parents in North Dallas, who wanted to see the excess student populations at their campuses moved to a new school. Many parents at Hotchkiss Montessori did not support the move, and they believed that some school board trustees tried to mislead them. Several people filed a desegregation case against the district in regards to the Hotchkiss plans.^[3] In 1992 federal judge Barefoot Sanders blocked the reopening of Hotchkiss,^[4] because he believed that the move would harm the magnet program and because the resulting Hotchkiss Elementary would have a student body with 83% racial and ethnic minorities. School board members filed an appeal with the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.^[5] In 1994 the Montessori program moved to Dealey.^[6]

The United States Department of Education designated Dealey as a Blue Ribbon School in 2001-02 and 2008-2009[1].
