Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy

Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy is a college at The New School within The New School for Public Engagement that teaches Nonprofit Management, Organizational Change Management, Urban Policy, and International Affairs to Master's students, as well as a Ph.D. program in Public and Urban Policy to doctoral students.

History

In 1964, the J. M. Kaplan Center for New York City Affairs was founded as the first teaching and research center in the United States devoted to the study of a single metropolitan area. In 1975, under the leadership of Dean Henry Cohen, the Kaplan Center evolved into the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy (now Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy), which was named in honor of the former New School trustee Robert J. Milano (1912–2000), who had also been a member of the advisory board of the J.M. Kaplan Center. Curriculum is structured to encourage creative thinking in aid of progressive social, economic, and political change in the public, private, and nonprofit arenas.

Milano offers Post Master's Certificates in Organizational Development, Sustainability Strategies, and Leadership and Change.

Milano also offers a PhD Program in Public and Urban Policy.

The Center for New York City Affairs: The Center for New York City Affairs is a nonpartisan institute dedicated to advancing innovative public policies that strengthen neighborhoods, support families and reduce urban poverty.Current projects include: The safety net for urban families and children; Public policy and New York’s immigrant families; Access to child care and early childhood education programs for working and low-income families; Reform of the city’s child protection and foster care systems; Family homelessness and its prevention, and Politics, policy and New York’s communities.

Inside Schools: In 2011, Inside Schools joined the Center for New York City Affairs through a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

The Community Development Finance Project (CDFP): The Community Development Finance Project is built on the recognition that bringing value added to underserved communities in the current complex environment requires a broad skill set that includes financial analysis, cultural competency, and an in-depth understanding of persistent and entrenched problems. The CDFP equips professionals with the business skills they will need combined with the urban policy and non-profit management skills that are the core of the Milano experience.

Observatory on Latin America (OLAT): he Observatory on Latin America (OLA) proposes to create new opportunities for multiple narratives and public debate on hemispheric processes of reform and change. The broad theme for the OLA is “Social Democracy in a Globalized World: Anticipating Futures in Latin America.” The OLA also continues with the prior work and impact created by the successful University program: the Argentina Observatory. From this program, new expanded research, university courses and public events were established at The New School and has been transformed into what is today known as The Observatory on Latin America (OLA).

Milano's Tenenbaum Leadership Initiative: Leading After Legacy: Milano's Tenenbaum Leadership Initiative The Tenenbaum Leadership Initiative,“Leading After Legacy” is targeted to Executive Directors who are the first CEO to succeed the founder or long term leader of their organization. This program - the first of its kind in the United States - is accepting nominations now for the twenty Tenenbaum Fellows who will have the privilege of experiencing this cutting-edge executive development program. TLI fellows are selected based on their commitment to their organizations, their own professional growth and desire to be a member of a community that explores succession challenges in the nonprofit sector. Milano was one of what was formerly eight schools within The New School: The New School for Social Research, Parsons The New School for Design, The New School for General Studies, Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, Mannes College The New School for Music, The New School for Drama, and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. The university now offers seven divisions, following the merging of Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy and The New School for General Studies into The New School for Public Engagement.

The New School’s emphasis on interdisciplinary studies opens Milano students to other graduate resources and programs at the university, including International Affairs, Global Finance, and Media Studies. The graduate programs are listed at http://www.newschool.edu/graduateprograms/default.aspx.

Milano also offers a joint BA/MS program with Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts and with the Bachelor's Program in The New School for Public Engagement.

Accreditation

The Urban Policy Analysis and Management Program is accredited by the National Association of Public Affairs and Administration.
