Joseph Worthington (adopted)Dr. Christopher "Chris" Warner is a fictional character and current main protagonist on the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street. He is portrayed by Michael Galvin. He is the only original character to still be on the show.[3]
The character arrived to the show in the first episode where he indulged in a affair with the married Jill (Suzy Aiken). The characters "Dr. Love" persona has since escalated and by 2005 the character had been married 4 times, with his marriages to Melanie Kirk (Tina Regtien) and Alison Raynor (Danielle Cormack) occurring off screen and his marriages to Tiffany Pratt (Alison James) and Toni Thompson (Laura Hill) being the focus of many of his storylines. Since originally appearing as a single bachelor, the character went on to have 6 children over the next 13 years and for Chris to participate in over 20 relationships and affairs. The character is a trained surgeon and has worked as CEO of Shortland Street Hospital twice, currently heading the surgery department.
Chris has been a relatively successful character with many reviewers and critics praising Galvin and landing him with a nomination for "Best Actor" at the Qantas Awards in 2008. The character has also participated in numerous high profile, highly rated storylines, namely the arrival of psychotic brother in law Dominic Thompson (Shane Cortese) and the return of his drug riddled brother Guy (Craig Parker).

Creation and Casting
Michael Galvin auditioned for the role in 1992 alongside his flatemate Marton Csokas,[4] he won the role with Csokas later going on to play Leonard Dodds. Chris' actor, Michael Galvin predicted the show would only last 12 months.[5]
Audiences were introduced to Dr. Chris Warner in the very first episode of Shortland Street in May 1992,[6] as the playboy doctor, with the only thing he prioritised more than sex, being that of his job at the clinic.[7] Chris' first scene featured him having sex with his aerobics instructor with his first line being: "That's exactly what I had in mind".[8]
Galvin soon grew sick of portraying Chris, being quoted as saying "after four years on Shortland Street there was so much of me in Dr Warner I wasn’t sure where he ended and I began."[9] Galvin resigned after 4 years on the soap, with Chris being written out with the storyline he was starting fresh in America. His final line was: "Course you do, lets go".[10]
Return
With declining ratings throughout 2000, producers decided to reinvent the show,[11] which meant 14 characters were written off and many more introduced. The revitalized show also saw the hospital set receive a makeover. To top it off, the reinvention also saw fan favorites; Chris and Rachel return after 4 years[12] and 2 years, respectively. Galvin was at first hesitant to accepting the role as it was an entirely new cast, but remembering the good times he had on the show, he accepted.[13] It was announced to the public in October 2000 that Chris and Rachel would return and be significantly different than when they left.[14] Chris' storyline featured Chris purchasing the clinic and shifting it to the public sector.
Upon his return in 2000, Galvin had to re-audition to prove he could still accurately portray the character.[12]
Storylines
1992-1999
Chris is shown in May 1992, having an affair with Jill (Suzy Aiken), his aerobics instructor however is also shown to be in a relationship with young nurse Alison Raynor (Danielle Cormack), the two break up following the revelation of his affair but reconcile towards the end of the year and get engaged. However the arrival of Chris' estranged wife Melanie Kirk (Tina Regtien) proved too much to Chris and he broke up with Alison the day before their wedding. In December Alison discovered she was pregnant. In 1993 Alison miscarried and Chris, after breaking up with Melanie, got engaged once again to Alison. The marriage was not meant to be however, as villainous Darryl Neilson (Mark Ferguson) drugged Chris and locked him in a barn, making him miss the ceremony and upset Alison so much she left the country. After his hopes of a relationship with Meredith (Stephanie Wilkin) failed, Chris got together with Katherine Blake (Margaret Umbers).
In 1994 Chris learnt Katherine was a murderer and she attempted to murder him. He had a brief flirtation with Jo Jordan (Greer Robson) which ends in disaster with Chris and Steve (Andrew Binns) getting into an argument during a drive and ending up off a bank, killing both Steve and T.P Aleni (Elizabeth Skeen) and leaving Chris with an addiction to painkillers. Chris and his brother Guy Warner (Craig Parker) got into a serious legal battle following the death of their father Bruce (Ken Blackburn) and the two learnt Margot (Glynis McNicoll) was not Guy's mother.
Chris fell in love with nurse Tiffany Pratt (Alison James) and the two married on Valentines Day 1996. The couple decided to move to America, but following the revelation Guy's daughter Tuesday (uncredited) had a brain tumour, Tiffany stayed behind, allowing the two brothers to leave in May 1996. Tiffany and Chris broke up offscreen in 1997 when she caught him in bed with ex fiance, Alison Raynor. He and Alison finally marry.
2000-2009
Chris returned in late 2000 with the news he had purchased the clinic, however it was clear Chris had a secret about his relationship with Alison. He soon revealed to Nick (Karl Burnett) that Alison had caught him cheating and they had recently divorced. He became engaged to childhood friend Samara Hindmarsh (Jodie Rimmer) who good friend Rachel McKenna (Angela Bloomfield) helped uncover as a fraud and murderer. Following a one night stand with Toni Thompson (Laura Hill), Chris became a father to Harry Thompson-Warner (Joshua Thompson) who was born in mid 2002. Chris eventually started to date Rachel but her alcoholism led Chris to a relationship with Donna Heka (Stephanie Tauevihi), causing Rachel to skip town in 2003.
Trouble arrived in the form of Dominic Thompson (Shane Cortese), Toni's brother. Dominic believed that he was also Chris' half-brother but he was devastated to learn this wasnt the case, prefering to reap the benefits of the Warner fortune, he kept this fact hidden from Chris. When Dominic was exposed, he persuaded Donna's stepdaughter from her first marriage, Tasha (Michelle Stewart) to claim that Chris had abused her and also told Donna that Chris had cheated on her with Tasha's teacher. While Tasha eventually confessed that she was lying, Donna ended the relationship.
Chris and Toni reconnected in Fiji however Dom kidnapped Chris but died in an explosion. A newly pregnant Toni and Chris decided to marry but their son, James miscarried weeks later. In 2006 Chris was mortified to find he was losing his sight. This resulted in a near miss when he swerved to the other side of the road with Harry in the back seat. Chris suspected he had a brain tumor but it turned out to just be a small solvable problem with his eyes.
In 2007 after resorting to his old ways and having an affair with Justine Jones (Lucy Wigmore) and ex lover Rachel McKenna, Chris was not surprised to learn that Toni had left him. However he was shocked to learn she had run away with his brother, Guy and taken Harry with them along with Guy's daughter Tuesday (Olivia Tennet). A distraught Chris starts a relationship with detective Lara Wade (Anna Henare). Chris locates Guy, Toni, Harry (Henry Williams) and Tuesday in December 2007 however they run away from him and get involved in a serious car crash.
In 2008 Chris learnt that all those in the car crash survived however is disgusted when he finds Guy is in a relationship with Toni. Chris plans a friendly divorce with Toni but when she falls intensely sick, they promise to work on their marriage, however on June 12, Toni dies in front of Chris and Harry. A devastated Chris starts dating Brooke Freeman (Beth Allen) but her inability to get on with Harry, causes them to break up. Chris is soon fired from his top rank as CEO and replaced by a recently returned Hone Ropata (Temuera Morrison).
In 2009, Chris became involved with his PA Libby Jeffries (Fleur Saville) and the two seemed perfectly matched with Libby considering marriage. However new doctor Gabrielle Jacobs (Virginie Le Brun) caught Chris' eye and Chris eventually dumped Libby to be with Gabrielle. When Rachel McKenna returns to Ferndale, she immediately makes it clear to Chris that she has come to win him back. Chris rejects Rachel's advances but grows concerned about her when he discovers she has relapsed in her alcoholism.
2010-
Gabrielle breaks it off with Chris in February 2010 after she feels like he is acting more as a father to her. Chris' cousin Isaac Worthington (Matt Minto) moves into Chris' house and constantly gets on his nerves, showing immaturity and a lack of commitment to his work. After two more failed relationships, Chris realizes he loves Rachel. He learns in August Alison has died and adopts his son (Geordie Holibar) he unknowingly had with her in 1996. At the end of the year, Chris finally gets Rachel but her, Chris and Callum (Peter Mochrie) get caught in a huge fire.
In 2011 Chris survives the fire and Rachel moves in with him. Chris is shocked when he learns his cousin Isaac skipped the country after performing an illegal operation and framing Luke (Gerald Urquhart) for drug addiction. Chris informs the police. Chris is also shocked to find Rachel spanked Harry (Reid Walker), questioning her role in the family. Chris is confused when Gabrielle returns to the hospital, bringing back past emotions.
Characterisation
"The problem with Chris is he has an enormous ego and he just can't let go."
—Michael Galvin on Chris' personality.[15]Chris is a surgeon, who throughout his run on Shortland Street, has appeared in several different roles around, at first the clinic and since 2001, the hospital. Upon appearing in 1992, Chris is a beginner surgeon working under the rule of CEO Dr. Michael McKenna. Shown to be slightly arrogant due to his family's wealth, Chris was often excluded by his workmates socially due to his naive sense of superiority. Despite using his wealth as a power mechanism, Chris is ashamed of his family, seeing himself as a much more esteemed doctor than that of his father. He also did not get on with his brother Guy, who he saw as ignorant. However Chris maintained a loving relationship with his mother Margot and helped her through her alcoholism. Another trait Chris has maintained throughout his years is that of a womanizer, affectionately earning the nickname "Dr. Love".
Upon Chris' return in 2000, he is shown to be much the same as he was. He still showed signs of arrogance and elitism but the exception being that Chris was now a highly respected world class surgeon. Chris carries on his womanizing ways but after marrying Toni, Chris is shown to start to live a less radical life, fathering his young son Harry. In the late 2000s, Chris is shown to have slowed down considerably. Though still enjoying a woman by his side, Chris is seen to prefer family life and is shown to be a lot more accepting and appropriate to those below him socially and in business.
Development
Dr. Love
When viewers were introduced to Chris in the first episode that aired in May 1992, the character's personality was already highly on show, with his first scene featuring Chris having sex with a married aerobic instructor. His multiple affair's, marriages and mindless flings over the next few years caused Chris to affectionately become known as "Dr. Love" both on and off screen.[7][17][18][19][20] He soon starts to date Alison Raynor and the two start a serious relationship. Not known to the audience, at this stage, Chris is married to Melanie Kirk, a fellow doctor he wed prior to the show in 1991. Alison and Chris become engaged and despite this commitment, Chris returns to Melanie who he eventually leaves again for Alison. Earning a bad name due to his constant juggling of women, Chris becomes shunned in his work environment, attempting to settle down with Katherine Blake only to discover she is a murderer. Chris did eventually settle down with Tiffany Pratt, marrying her. But once again Chris cheats on Tiffany with Alison, who he marries and again cheats on. Galvin was curious as to why Chris had adopted the nickname, stating Chris was only sleazy for the shows first 6 months.[13] Upon his return, Chris dates several women before starting to date Rachel McKenna who he cheats on with Donna. After having a one night stand with Toni Thompson, Chris finds himself a father and soon marries Toni. He cheats on her however with both Justine Jones and Rachel. While being separated from Toni, he has a fling with Lara Wade. He later dates Libby Jeffries but falls in love with Gabrielle Jacobs and leaves her.
In 2010 the tables are turned on Chris when his partner, Gabrielle Jacobs breaks up with him. She returns in 2011 to a shocked Chris, who is in a steady relationship with Rachel. Chris admits to Rachel he still has feelings for Gabrielle. Chris is further tormented when Gabrielle starts to date Rachel's brother, Jonathon. In September Chris refers to himself as a "former player".
Chris is shown to blame his father for his womanizing ways and lack of commitment, yet when embarking on an affair in 2007, Chris shows remorse and tries hard not to full for Rachel's charms, yet does not succeed and ultimately ends his marriage to Toni.
Relationships
Rachel McKenna
At the start of the show, Chris works under CEO Michael McKenna. The two clashed at times, and while Chris found Michael rather arrogant, he respected him professionally. (Chris would later reference this in a conversation with Rachel stating "In the dark old days when I was CEO, I often found myself asking 'What would Michael McKenna do?"). Rachel was introduced as Michael's 16-year-old daughter in 1993, when Chris would have been 27. Though sharing scenes where Chris would pass messages to Michael through Rachel or Rachel would admire Chris' handsomeness, the two never shared a storyline and Chris even referred to Rachel as spoiled. Once both characters had returned, Chris in 2000 after four years away and Rachel in 2001 after two, Chris started dating Samara. Rachel took a dislike to Samara and warned Chris against it. By this time, both characters were in administration and shared a lot more scenes together as their positions made them a lot more relatable and compatible. Rachel developed a small crush on Chris and exposed Samara as a fraud and murderer. Chris started to dislike Rachel but soon he too shared feelings towards the much younger woman. The two started dating when Rachel confirmed that Chris was the father of baby Harry. Chris could not handle her alcoholism though and by 2003 the two had broken up. A seriously distraught Rachel left Ferndale.
In celebration of the 15th Anniversary, producers created a poll of characters most wanted to return. Rachel won and in May 2007, Rachel returned to New Zealand screens. At first it seemed like Rachel had returned to get Chris out of his job, but it soon became apparent she was after Chris romantically and though she was now engaged, Rachel still loved Chris. Chris did not have feelings for her but gave in to her and they slept together. Rachel offered Chris a further relationship but Chris declined. Rachel returned again in October 2009 again to try and win back Chris. Chris was now in a relationship with Gabrielle Jacobs and did not share Rachel's feelings, going so far as to surprise her with a visit from her ex husband. Rachel, hurt and betrayed gave up on Chris and started to date Callum McKay but in July 2010, Chris suddenly gets his feelings back towards Rachel. Rachel admits her love too and the two start an affair. After several ups and downs, by the end of 2010, the two were back in an open relationship. In 2011 Chris encourages Rachel to take the job of CEO which would result in her taking the role her father originated 19 years beforehand.
Family
Chris' father, Sir. Bruce Warner, is introduced midway through 1992 as an arrogant womanizer. Chris is shown to severely dislike his father for the way he treats his mother. Chris also states how disgusting it is that he plays women like he does. Much of the early hospital staff compare Chris to his father humorously. Though despising him on a personal level, Chris considers his father a great surgeon but also a poor father. Bruce passes away in 1995 with Chris showing little remorse.
With Guy Warner's return in 2007, it is clear that Chris has turned into his father's mirror image. Guy tells Toni this when he learns of Chris' affair with Rachel McKenna and Chris also states this to Toni saying he became the one man he hated most. Chris stated one of the reasons he turned out the way he did was his father spoilt him and was a constant womanizer, though Chris has shown little recognition this is the way he has raised his own son Harry. In 2011 Chris was quoted to say; "I hated that old coot till the day he died, no scratch that, I still hate him." about his father and was shown to compare himself to Hunter McKay and Sir. Bruce to Hunter's father Callum McKay.
Despite a frosty relationship with his father, Chris experienced a good friendship with his mother, Margot Warner. Helping her through Bruce's many affairs, Chris was always supportive and helped Margot overcome her alcoholism. He was deeply hurt when she died of cancer in 2003.
Upon Guy's debut a few months into the shows run, it is shown that the two brothers do not get on with Chris very hesitant to allow Guy into his personal life. Guy is shown to think of Chris as too "uptight" and arrogant while Chris refers to Guy as immature and ignorant. The two clash early on in the show when Guy makes moves on Chris' ex girlfriends, Meredith Fleming and Alison Raynor. He goes so far as to ask Alison out, much to the annoyance of Chris. Chris is again frustrated when Guy gets a job at the hospital in 1993 and tells him to stay away. Throughout the year Guy is shown to have a loose humorous attitude while Chris maintains a more serious, motivated approach. Chris is shown to try his best to avoid Guy, but the two share many run ins in the staff room and family dinners with their parents. The brothers clash heavily over many things throughout the nineties, mainly that of Chris' twin Amanda and her care and also their fathers will. They are shocked when they learn that Guy is a result of Bruce Warner's affair with Chris' nanny and that they are only half brothers, this only increases their hostility and when Guys partner Carmen Roberts dies, he blames Chris for the stress he was putting on her about the will. The two soon make up when Chris reveals he is leaving Shortland Street, he offers to take Guy with him and in 1996 the two brothers leave the street.
Chris is shocked when Guy returns in 2007 and learns Guy is now a successful writer, though he does not show any happiness and he tells Toni that there is likely a catch behind it. Guy grows angry towards Chris for not supporting him and for using his relationship with Amanda as a way of showing his commitment to the family. When Guy asks Chris for money to start a TV show, Chris declines insisting Guy will not go through with it and steal his money. Chris starts to grow suspicious of Guy and soon learns he has a serious drug problem, he stops Guys access to drugs and Guy soon falls into a downwards spiral and relapses, taking his anger out on Chris, he runs away with Toni.
When Chris discovers Guy in late 2007, Guy threatens Chris and grows increasingly angry towards him, he then escapes in his car with Toni, Harry and Tuesday. They get into a serious car crash, which Chris blames entirely on Guy. Chris is surprisingly saddened when he learns Guy might die, but when he awakes from his coma, Chris lectures him and Guy makes a personal vendetta against him. When Guy eventually agrees to go to rehab, Chris is happy for his brother but shocked when he reads Guys autobiography which blames Chris for his drug problem. Chris disowns Guy and Guy announces he is leaving the country. He eventually apologizes and thanks Chris for all he has done, Guy departs the show, finally on good terms with his brother.
Chris' relationship with his children are relatively equal, with him treating both Harry and Phoenix with respect. Due to Harry's poor upbringing at the hands of his mother Toni, Chris is fiercely protective of Harry, spoiling him in the process. However Chris is shown to be aware of Harry's deceitful personality, even warning Rachel of it. With Phoenix entering Chris' life late, Chris is shown to be quite ignorant towards his personality, not knowing what he truely wants for his birthday. However Chris is shown to be understanding and supportive of Phoenix's interest in the arts.
Feud with Callum McKay
Even since Callum's (Peter Mochrie) first episode in 2006, Callum and Chris have never seen eye to eye. The friction started when Chris found Callum very arrogant in his job interview and was reluctant to hire him. Their mismatching personalities met a head when Callum's wife Justine (Laurie Foell) started an affair with Chris and Callum found out in 2007. Callum took out a vendetta against Chris and started to blackmail him, threatening to tell Chris' wife Toni (Laura Hill). Chris rebuffed by paying a women to pretend Callum had sexually abused her during a breast cancer check. To get back at Chris, Callum hires Toni to work with him on a daily basis at "The Primary Care Clinic".[21] The two also train together on a fun-run to which Chris warns Toni that Callum may be interested in her sexually. When Callum hears Toni has left Chris because of his affair with Rachel McKenna, he allows her to stay at his house and eventually reveals to her the affair between Chris and Justine. Callum is seen numerous times over the next year insulting Chris' management abilities and blaming him for the string of murders taking place.
In 2008, Callum replaces Chris as CEO of the hospital. He instantly shows his superiority over Chris by investing into Justine's department rather than Chris'. The two are again at a head when they interview sinister Ethan Pierce (Owen Black) for the new head of surgery position. Chris deems Ethan too arrogant, but Callum, wanting points over Chris, employs Ethan, who later goes on to get Callum suspended.
In 2010 Callum starts a relationship with Rachel McKenna (Angela Bloomfield) but is displeased toward the end of the year when he learns Chris and Rachel shared a kiss. Accusing Chris of stealing his girlfriend, Callum gives it his all to make sure Rachel stays with him, but to no prevail when Rachel breaks up with him to move in with Chris. As the year ends, Callum risks his life to shield Chris and Rachel from a huge explosion, in turn leaving him with third degree burns and metal shards in his back. In 2011, Callum takes in Chris' ex Gabrielle Jacobs (Virginie Le Brun) much to Chris' annoyance. As the year progresses, Chris and Rachel make it clear they want Callum gone from the CEO role. Callum is finally defeated in May when Chris, Rachel and Shane revealed he has been fired. Chris opposes Callum's bid to resume his position as CEO, causing Callum to lash out at Chris calling him a spoilt rich kid.
Reception
Popular both with fans and critics alike, Michael Galvin has got praise throughout his time on the show getting nominated for Best Actor at the 2008 Qantas TV and Film Awards[22] and numerous nominations in the TV Guide Best on the Box Awards. Reviwer Hugh Sundae of the New Zealand Herald praised Galvins acting in the 90 Minute episode saying he was "good" and "consistent".[23] For marketing for Galvin's play "Station to Station", Chris was described as; 'perennially popular'.[17]
Chris received negative backlash upon his return in 2000 for not showing the same characteristics as he had when he left and for being "boring" and no longer a "rouge".[24]
Due to the characters longevity on screen, Chris has earned himself comparison to Coronation Street's Ken Barlow.[3][25][26]
Chris' major storyline of 2010, his relationship with Rachel, had mixed reception upon airing with some fans finding it "boring" and other saying they "love" the storyline.[27]
