reservoir inNorthern California about Convert|25|mi|km|0|abbr=on northeast of Sacramento in Placer, El Dorado, and Sacramento Counties. The lake is formed byFolsom Dam , constructed in 1955 to control theAmerican River . The dam and lake are part of theFolsom Project , which also includes the Nimbus afterbay reservoir and dam facilities. The Folsom Project, operated by theUnited States Bureau of Reclamation , is part of theCentral Valley Project , a multipurpose project that providesflood control,hydroelectricity ,drinking water and water forirrigation . TheFolsom Lake State Recreation Area is managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
