History
Dürrenroth is first mentioned in 1275 as Rota. In 1326 it was mentioned as Durren Rot.[3]
Geography
Dürrenroth has an area, as of 2009[update], of 14.12 km2 (5.45 sq mi). Of this area, 9.96 km2 (3.85 sq mi) or 70.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 3.25 km2 (1.25 sq mi) or 23.0% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.79 km2 (0.31 sq mi) or 5.6% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.04 km2 (9.9 acres) or 0.3% is either rivers or lakes.[4]
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.4% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.9%. 20.8% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.2% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 33.6% is used for growing crops and 34.9% is pastures, while 2.1% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[4]
The municipality is located on the Rothbach stream and includes the village of Dürrenroth on the southern valley terrace. North of the Rothbach are the hamlets of Hubberg, Hubbergschachen and Gassen. South of the Rothbach is the hamlet of Waltrigen and scattered individual farm houses.
Demographics
Dürrenroth has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 1,076.[1] As of 2007[update], 1.5% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -4.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (99.6%), with about 0.3% speaking French.
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 63.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the local small left-wing parties (10.1%), the SPS (6.3%) and the FDP (5.9%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 24.8% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 54.7% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 20.4%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Dürrenroth about 76.9% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Dürrenroth has an unemployment rate of 0.68%. As of 2005[update], there were 211 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 73 businesses involved in this sector. 71 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 16 businesses in this sector. 128 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 23 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
