As of 2003, the village has an estimated population of 9,333 and a population density of 183.83 persons per km². The total area is 50.77 km².
Onna Village is the site of OIST, the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology.[1] With all research and education conducted in English and over half of faculty and students coming from outside Japan, OIST promises to bring many more international residents to the village.
