† Appearances (Goals).Christopher Kelan "Chris" Beardsley (born 28 February 1984) is an English footballer who plays for League One side Stevenage as a striker.
Beardsley started his career with Mansfield Town, spending two years at the club, during which he spent a brief period on loan at Worksop Town in 2004. He left Mansfield at the end of the 2003–04 season, and joined Doncaster Rovers after a successful trial in the summer of 2004. He failed to make an impact at the club, and subsequently signed for Kidderminster Harriers four months later. At the end of the season, he rejoined Mansfield Town, but only managed a total of 20 appearances during his one and a half year tenure at the club, and was loaned out to Conference National side Rushden & Diamonds in January 2007. He signed for the club on a permanent basis a month later, but struggled for first–team appearances after Graham Westley was sacked as manager.
Beardsley then joined York City in June 2007, but suffered a broken jaw in two places in a match against Grays Athletic and, as a result, struggled to regain his place in the first team, and was loaned out to Kettering Town in December 2007. His loan spell at Kettering was hugely successful, and he joined the club on a permanent basis a month later, helping the side win promotion to the Conference National. The following season, he rejoined Kidderminster Harriers on loan in November 2008, but only managed a handful of appearances. He was later released by Kettering, and signed for Stevenage in May 2009 — helping the side secure promotion to the Football League for the first time in the club's history in his first season with the Hertfordshire outfit. The following season, Beardsley was part of the Stevenage squad that earned promotion to League One as a result of winning the 2010–11 League Two play-offs in May 2011.

Career
Early career
Born in Derby, Derbyshire, Beardsley began his career at Mansfield Town's youth system as a trainee, where he signed a professional contract on 4 July 2003.[3] In his first spell at Mansfield, Beardsley was regarded as a promising striker; he had three starts during his first period with the club and scored one goal, against York City.[4] During this time he was sent on a one-month loan to Northern Premier League side Worksop Town.[5] Beardsley made his Worksop debut in the club's 4–1 win against Radcliffe Borough, assisting two goals in the game.[6] In the following game, he scored the only goal of a 1–0 win against Blyth Spartans.[7] His final appearance for Worksop came in a 1–1 draw against Whitby Town, playing 76 minutes before being substituted.[8] However, he received little playing time at Mansfield, and joined newly promoted League One club Doncaster Rovers after a successful trial in the summer of 2004.[9]
Beardsley failed to make an impact at Doncaster Rovers, despite scoring once against Lincoln City in the Football League Trophy,[10] and consequently moved to Kidderminster Harriers of League Two in December 2004.[11] He played regularly for Kidderminster, scoring five goals, but ultimately the club were relegated back to the Conference National. He opted to return to Mansfield Town, now playing in League Two, in the summer of 2005.[12] However, his season came to an abrupt end against local rivals Notts County on 29 August that year, when he collided with goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington and suffered a broken leg.[13] Beardsley returned to first-team action almost a year later, on 12 August 2006, coming on as an 88th minute substitute in a 1–1 draw with Stockport County.[14] His first two goals of the 2006–07 season came in Mansfield's 3–0 Football League Trophy victory against Grimsby Town on 31 October 2006.[15] Shortly after, however, Beardsley joined Conference National side Rushden & Diamonds on a one-month loan on 19 January 2007.[16] He made his debut for Rushden a day later, in the club's 2–1 home victory against Stafford Rangers,[17] and scored his first goal for the club in the following game, scoring the second of a 3–1 win against Cambridge United at Nene Park.[18] In his third game for Rushden, Beardsley scored the only goal of the game in a 1–0 win against Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.[19] Following his successful loan spell, he signed for Rushden permanently on an 18-month contract on a free transfer in late January.[20][21] However, he was released at the end of the season following a change in management, making a total of twelve appearances and scoring two goals for the club.[22][23]
York City and Kettering Town
He was signed by York City on 19 June 2007.[24] He turned down a loan move to Tamworth in September 2007 to prove his worth at York.[25] He suffered a broken jaw in two places in York's game against Grays Athletic following an incident with Jamie Stuart in September 2007, which was likely to rule him out for four months.[26][27] Essex Police confirmed they were making enquiries following the incident.[28] After his recovery he joined Kettering Town on a one-month loan on 31 December,[29] and made an immediate impact, scoring two goals and being named man of the match in a 6–1 victory over Solihull Moors on his debut on 2 January.[30] Four days later, he scored twice in Kettering's 3–1 victory against Harrogate Town.[31] Beardsley scored his fifth goal in three games the following week, scoring the first goal in the club's 2–0 away win at Hucknall Town.[32] He joined the club permanently on a free transfer in January 2008,[33] and scored a total of eleven goals as Kettering were promoted to the Conference National at the end of the 2007–08 campaign.[34] The following season, Beardsley scored in Kettering's 2–0 televised win against Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium,[35] and also netted the only goal of the game in Kettering's 1–0 victory against Stevenage.[36] Beardsley scored twice within the space of three days in October 2008, scoring in victories against Northwich Victoria and Eastbourne Borough respectively.[37][38] Despite scoring four goals in the first two months of the campaign, Beardsley rejoined former club Kidderminster Harriers on a one-month loan in November 2008, and made three appearances for the club during the brief loan spell, all of which were victories.[39] Beardsley returned to his parent club in January 2009, and featured in the club's 4–2 home loss to Fulham in the FA Cup just days later.[40] He featured regularly for Kettering until the end of the 2008–09 season.[41] However, he was released by Kettering on 1 May 2009, having made a total of 57 appearances in all competitions, scoring 15 times.[42]
Stevenage
Following his release from Kettering, Beardsley signed for Stevenage on a one-year contract on 29 May 2009, reuniting him with manager Graham Westley, who had previously signed Beardsley when at Rushden.[43] He made a scoring debut in Stevenage's 3–0 victory over Ebbsfleet United in August.[44] Beardsley featured regularly during the first half of 2009–10 season at Stevenage, scoring in victories against both Mansfield and Salisbury City.[45][46] His fine form continued into 2010; scoring twice in two games against Cambridge United over the Christmas period,[47][48] and notching two goals in FA Trophy fixtures against Ebbsfleet and Dover Athletic respectively.[49][50] He scored his eighth goal of the season in a 6–0 victory over Eastbourne Borough.[51] Beardsley's goal tally reached double figures when he scored twice against Kidderminster in the FA Trophy.[52] His debut season with the Hertfordshire club was a successful one, both individually and collectively, with Beardsley scoring a total of 10 times from 47 appearances — as Stevenage won promotion to the Football League for the first time in the club's history.[53][54][55]
Ahead of the 2010–11 season, Beardsley scored in pre-season victories against Corby Town and Hitchin Town respectively.[56] He made his first appearance of the season in the club's first ever Football League fixture, coming on as a 60th minute substitute in Stevenage's 2–2 draw against Macclesfield Town,[57] and scored his first goal of the season shortly after in a 1–1 draw away to Aldershot Town.[58][59] On 31 August 2010, Beardsley suffered a dislocated shoulder in Stevenage's 1–0 home loss to Brentford in the Football League Trophy.[60][61] The injury subsequently ruled him out of first-team action for six weeks.[61] Beardsley returned to the first-team on 16 November 2010, starting in the club's FA Cup win against MK Dons, before being substituted in the 81st minute.[62] His second goal of the 2010–11 campaign came in Stevenage's 1–0 win at Accrington Stanley in the second leg of the League Two play-offs. Beardsley's goal was scored in the 90th minute, after he came on as a substitute in the 77th minute, and ensured Stevenage won the tie 3–0 on aggregate.[63] He came on as an 85th minute substitute in the Final as Stevenage beat Torquay United 1–0 at Old Trafford to earn promotion to League One.[64] Beardsley made 32 appearances during the club's first season in the Football League, scoring two goals.[65]
During pre-season prior to the start of the 2011–12 season, Beardsley scored the only goal of the game as Stevenage beat Hitchin Town in their first pre-season fixture.[66][67] He made his first competitive appearance of the campaign as a 95th minute substitute in Stevenage's 4–3 extra-time defeat to Peterborough United in the League Cup, scoring Stevenage's third goal with a header from an acute angle to briefly restore parity.[68][69] Beardsley scored his second goal of the season on 16 August 2011, matching his 2010–11 goal tally in the process, when he came on as a substitute with ten minutes remaining and scored Stevenage's third goal in a 3–1 away victory against Bournemouth.[70] He scored twice against Rochdale in a 4–2 home win on 3 September, taking his tally for the season to four goals.[71] Beardsley's first of the match came after Rochdale goalkeeper Jake Kean parried Craig Reid's shot into the path of Beardsley, who scored from close range. His second goal came just before half-time; turning quickly on the edge of the area before curling the ball into the far corner of the goal.[71][72] His fifth goal of the season came in a 1–0 away victory against Brentford on 25 October 2011, with Beardsley's goal settling the match with twenty minutes remaining.[73]
Personal life
Beardsley studied sports journalism at Staffordshire University.[74] He used his degree to take part in regular podcasts, and he also wrote frequently for a local newspaper in Stevenage.[74] He supports Derby County.[75]
