Palos Verdes Library District

The Palos Verdes Library District (PVLD) is an independent special-purpose district serving the 70,000 residents of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California. PVLD is governed by an elected Board of Library Trustees that consists of five members who voluntarily serve without monetary compensation. PVLD's three libraries - Peninsula Center Library, Malaga Cove Library, and Miraleste Library - serve the cities of Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, and Rolling Hills Estates, California.

Each year the three branches of the PVLD record a door-count of over 600,000 and circulate nearly 850,000 items out of their collection of 381,000+ items. The PVLD employs 81 employees as of March 1, 2007 (37 full-time and 44 part-time). Peninsula Friends of the Library The Peninsula Friends of the Library is an all-volunteer membership organization founded in 1961 to enhance the services and programs of our Peninsula libraries. Membership fees and funds raised through book sales, The Library Shop at Peninsula Center Library, and other fundraising events are used to provide ongoing support for many library services and programs including: • Summer Reading Program• Sunday Hours at the Peninsula Center Library• Internet access at all 3 libraries• Volunteer Recognition program• Library Update newsletter• Special purchases of items for the library collections, furnishings, and equipment [http://www.pvld.org/about/support.shtml] .

Children Services The Palos Verdes Library District offers thirteen storytimes [http://www.pvld.org/kids/story.html] a week throughout the district. The storytimes, aimed at a wide range of ages, are conducted by professional librarians who read stories and incorporate songs, movement, puppets, and more. One in particular is the Miraleste Teen Book Club.

Adult Services The Palos Verdes Library District also offers a variety of adult programs and classes. This includes computer classes on the Internet, computer basics, e-mail, the online catalog, online databases, knitting club, chess club, history discussion group and many more.

History Discussion Group- Every 4th Thursday Malaga Cove Library welcomes the History Discussion Group. The group was started by patron Richard Remy and is now run by Library employee Kendel Cornwell. We have a speaker each month on any history in the world! We meet at 2PM. This is free and open to anyone the is interested. For information call 310-377-9584 ext. 551.
