Electoral district of Fremantle
- Electoral district of Fremantle
Fremantle is a state parliamentary electoral district in Western Australia, which elects a single member to the state's Legislative Assembly. The seat is held for the Labor Party by Jim McGinty, the Attorney-General and Minister for Health.
Profile
The electorate covers 45 km² including the City of Fremantle and surrounding suburbs south of the Swan River mouth, along with Rottnest Island. Labor won the seat at the February 2005 state election with a majority of 14.9 per cent after the distribution of minor party preferences. The Greens polled 17.0 per cent of the primary vote, their third best result in the state.
History
Fremantle has been held by Labor members since 1924. The member prior to Jim McGinty was David Parker, who served as Deputy Premier under Premier Peter Dowding from February 1988 until February 1990, when he was compelled to resign over his association with the financial scandals collectively known as WA Inc ["Political Chronicle: Western Australia", Australian Journal of Politics & History 36 (3), p. 447] . He was later convicted of charges relating to misuse of party funds.
