In November 2007, the voters of Independence, Missouri, the city in which Van Horn and its feeder schools are located, and Kansas City Missouri, the district that housed the school, voted for Van Horn, its feeder middle and three elementary schools to be taken over by the Independence School District.The change was made because of the poor performance.In the change, most of the minority students that go to school there will have to leave.Leaving the school in a white majority.The Independence won the school battle after an election and a court battle.
