Australian Labor Party (ALP), he currently represents theElectoral district of Fremantle in theWestern Australian Legislative Assembly . He held three key posts in the Gallop and Carpenter Labor governments including that of Attorney General, Minister for Health, and Minister for Electoral Affairs.McGinty studied Arts and Law at the
University of Western Australia . Before entering politics, he worked as an industrial officer, then became Secretary of the Miscellaneous Workers' Union. He successfully ran as a Labor candidate in aby-election for Fremantle in 1990, and has held the seat ever since. In the Lawrence ministry of 1991 – 1993 he served as Minister for Housing, Construction, Services, Heritage and Environment.In 1994 Lawrence resigned to pursue a spot in federal politics, and was replaced as Leader of the State Opposition by her deputy, Ian Taylor. However Taylor resigned after only four months as leader, and McGinty unexpectedly replaced him as Leader of the Opposition. McGinty led the ALP until 1996, when he was replaced by
