Michael Gross (writer)

Michael Gross (born 1952 in New York City), is an author, journalist and editor. He has a B.A. in History from Vassar College. He graduated in 1970 from South Side High School in Rockville Centre, the same school that later graduated Howard Stern.

His most recent book is Rogues' Gallery: The Secret Story of the Lust, Lies, Greed and Betrayals That Made the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the paperback edition of a book first published in hardcover with the subtitle The Secret History of the Moguls and the Money That Made the Metropolitan Museum, an unauthorized social history of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (Broadway Books, 2009). Previously he published 740 Park: The Story of the World's Richest Apartment Building (Broadway Books, 2005), Genuine Authentic: The Real Life of Ralph Lauren (Harper Collins, 2002), My Generation: Fifty Years of Sex, Drugs, Rock, Revolution, Glamour, Greed, Valor, Faith and Silicon Chips (Cliff Street Books, 2000) and Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women (William Morrow, 1995).^[1] Model was a New York Times bestselling book. His next book is a social history focused on high-end real estate in Los Angeles.^[2] Unreal Estate: Money, Ambition and the Lust For Land in Los Angeles will be published in fall 2011.^[3]

He is a contributing editor of Travel and Leisure magazine; he joined "Crain's New York Business" as a bi-weekly columnist in February 2011^[4]; he has been a guest editor of gawker.com and a columnist for Contribute, the now-defunct philanthropy magazine, and has also written extensively for The New York Times, New York magazine, Esquire magazine, GQ, Vanity Fair, Town & Country and The Times.^[5] Early in his career, he wrote about rock music and was the editor in chief of Rock Magazine. He was the editor of the Fire Island News, a weekly newspaper in a New York summer colony, in 1978. He then began covering fashion photography for Photo District News and subsequently wrote the column Fashion Statements for Manhattan, Inc., a brief-lived business magazine. After writing about fashion through the 1980s and early 1990s, he began covering the world of the rich and famous for New York. In 2000, he was briefly a Senior Editor of George, the political magazine. In 2002, he wrote a gossip column, The Word, for the New York Daily News. From 2002 until 2010, he edited the written content of Bergdorf Goodman Magazine. ^[6] The New York Post said he "aggressively transformed the once-catalog-like publication into an eclectic cultural forum.” ^[7]

His sister is Jane Gross, who recently retired as a reporter for the New York Times, where he also worked as a reporter and columnist. Their father, Milton Gross, was also a journalist, a syndicated sports columnist for the New York Post and an author.
