Matthew Jan Oppenheim (born 1967) was the Senior Vice President of Legal and Business Affairs for the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
He got a Juris Doctor in 1993 from Cornell University. Oppenheim left it on March 8, 2004 in order to join the law firm of Jenner and Block, which he left in 2006.
Oppenheim is still seen as the "head enforcer". [1] For instance, Mr Oppenheim was the sole attorney representing the RIAA in, Arista v. Does 1-19, District of Columbia. According to copyright law expert Ray Beckerman, Oppenheim is "the person who has been identified by the RIAA lawyers sometimes as the 'client', sometimes as the 'industry representative', and sometimes as the 'client representative', and on at least one occasion as 'the only person who had settlement authority' for the RIAA members."[2]
In several controversial moves, he has threatened prominent critics of the RIAA, like university professors Edward Felten from Princeton and Charles Nesson from Harvard, with lawsuits and/or other sanctions to intimidate them. [3][4]
